Who here lives with parents still (aged 21+)

Moved out just after my 18th. I was lucky enough to have like minded friends, 7 of us rented and (then ended up buying) a massive run down town house. It needed a lot of work doing to it, we had massive rows over workload/money/late nights/food etc but honestly had a blast and a good life lesson. Made a tidy profit on it too, pre housing market bang.

I never felt "at home" at home, if you know what I mean. My wife lived at home until we got engaged.

21 here, just about finish my degree, I'll be staying for maybe the next year and then I'm going round the world traveling so hopefully I'll be able to secure a job etc when I come back, then I'll move out

I moved out at 22. Well technically at 19, but university doesn't count. I don't live far from them, but I like having my own space, my own schedule etc... We're a very close family but also one likes to have one's space!

As long as people contribute towards food/bills of the house then I think living at home until you can move out it's absolutely fine. Furthermore, there are people who's income helps support their parents too and living under the same roof is perfect for that. Heck I know some people who have lived in the same house for 40+ years, it's just the way they've done things. Nowt wrong with that - it's just not for me. However, I think it is true to say that more and more people are incapable of living away from mummy and daddy these days - but then life is more expensive than it used to be.

Then again I'm an independent sort of person.

The average first time buyer age has risen to around 34 now so living with your folks till you are nearly 30 is not unusual these days.

I moved out when I was 28.... Couldnt afford it before.

Plenty people work, save up, don't go out as much, get a one way flight to somewhere and just work.

I am on placement and will turn 22 next week.

I have a very easy life at home, but as a 2 bed terrace round here is £120,000 and at least a 10% deposit is required for a mortgage, I will have to spend some time saving up first. i won't even graduate until I am 23.

I firmly believe that rent is a waste of money. I have a massive en-suite bedroom here at home so I am in no rush to leave. On the other hand I don't want to be at home when I am 28+ !!

I imagine that many many people my age won't move out.

A single man/woman has zero chance of buying a house by themselves if they are on under £18,000.

Nothing wrong with living with parents in your 20's, so long as you're working towards something (i.e. not just spending your extra money on rubbish). Aim to move out by 25 though, some people start thinking you're a bit wierd after that I moved out when I was 18, it's great having independance (although sometimes tough if you're a long way from home).

Because you get to 60 years old and don't have anything to show for your life
Over 40 years, buying a house will work out far cheaper than renting all your life.
I think that rent is money down the drain, but as you said, each to their own.

Dude, who cares what other peeps think. I'm not moving out by 25 into a dustbin just so I don't get a comment from mates once in a while. I'll stay as long as it takes for me to get a proper house.

Moved out at 18...

Though one of my mates lived at home after Uni/Law School until he was about 25/26

not because he was poor but because his parents had a massive house - tbh.. I'd have done the same if I was fortunate enough to be in his position - he definitely had a better lifestyle living at home than he could have if he'd rented his own flat.

Agreed. 25 and still in my mothers house, I help with bills, food taking her out and about. I'm her carer so I have to be here, plus we're a close family who want to support one another.

A lot of people rent on the continent and buy later in life - but as we agree it depends on what you want.

I don't see it as money down the drain, I have a huge amount of disposable income as a result of renting, which I can put towards savings (for a house if I wanted to), holidays (I need my 4 holidays a year), and any other bits I need. I spend a lot less on rent/bills than I would on a basic mortgage on £150k which in London doesn't get you much but a cardboard box! I do have shares in property abroad so I have equity I don't feel compelled to have something in the UK.

Actually I was thinking more on the lines of girls rather than mates I agree tho, don't move into a dustbin, you're not going to have a mansion for a first house though, gotta make the jump someday.

tis a common but not necessarily accurate statement

historically might have been true over a lot of time periods but over some it certainly isn't

In a situation where say renting is less than the interest portion of a mortgage and house prices are more or less stagnant or in line with inflation then renting is quite clearly not throwing money down the drain - buying is. Ditto to any period of house price falls.

I'm 32 living with my mother, I lived with my ex for 5 years and 2 on my own, my mum needs help so I moved back in, we both get on well so its great and much better for us both financially.

I have just bought a Civic Type R , go figure where my priorities lie.

Deffo moving out this year tho !! Just had a set back as I wanted my quick car since I've never been able to have one since getting banned for racing on the highway at the age of 18.

Im 22 and will have to move home after uni this summer. It will be the only way I can afford to go travelling soon.

Anyway my parents said I could move into one of the barn converted flats on the farm for free which would be awesome.

Need to find a mate to share with to make it bearable I think as I can not normally stand being back at home since going to uni.
