Moved out just after my 18th. I was lucky enough to have like minded friends, 7 of us rented and (then ended up buying) a massive run down town house. It needed a lot of work doing to it, we had massive rows over workload/money/late nights/food etc but honestly had a blast and a good life lesson. Made a tidy profit on it too, pre housing market bang.
I never felt "at home" at home, if you know what I mean. My wife lived at home until we got engaged.

I moved out when I was 18, it's great having independance (although sometimes tough if you're a long way from home).
I do have shares in property abroad so I have equity I don't feel compelled to have something in the UK.
