Going on from what Housey said about getting 300bhp from a Golf GTi just out of interest what the best engines for tuning. We all know for example that the Honda Civic Type R/S2000 engine needs some sort of FI to get anywhere, where as the GTi you are looking at 60bhp~ increase just from a remap.

So was basically wondering what are some stand out engines in terms of tuning (mapping/induction etc...)

x35i engine will give you near M3 power with a simply remap I believe?
1.9derv Fiat engines will go from 130bhp to 200~bhp with a map and induction
Focus ST engine up to 300bhp easily

Can't you get stupid (600bhp+) figures on those twin turbo Supras on stock internals yet Porsche engines are so highly tuned already you'll barely get any sort of gains?

etc....

Nissan SR20DET can easily take it to 400bhp on stock internals thats double the power from stock (197bhp).

With some forged internals they can output some stupid HP.

The VAG 2.0 TFSI is apparently nice and easy to remap.
200bhp at standard.
A basic Stage 1 remap will get you to around 240bhp - so 40bhp with software alone.
Stage 2 and 3 and you really can take it up there.

I'm assuming this is probably the engine in this GTI you mentioned.

I think it's more impressive that you can get 250bhp with just an exhaust and boost tweek (plus a fuel pump and new plugs if you want it to last). It's a shame the gearbox won't last long above about 350bhp though.

you can take a 150bhp 1.8T to around 500bhp with a big turbo conversion, but in realistic cost:bhp increases it is also great, seeing around 60bhp increase with a stage 1 remap alone.

The 2.0TFSI is even better with gains, but doesn't have the same cheapness factor due to it being newer so tuning parts being less readily available/newer so more expensive

You can remap most Evo's 4G63 with supporting mods (Filter, Exhaust, Fuel Pump etc) from 260bhp to 400bhp with little trauma.

Rods are the limiting point at 400bhp, change them and you are good for up to 550bhp.

Bottom end is rock solid, and stock cranks are used in rally applications.

I believe the injectors (560cc)will flow to 400bhp (circa 1.7 bar) and the stock turbo's are usually no good after 400-420bhp.

Rb26DETT in R32/R33/R34 you can get around 400bhp from just exhaust and filter.

Add some better turbos, injectors and a remap 600bhp on stock internals.

I think the JZA80 Supra must be the king of BPU mods, over 400hp with a completely stock engine and just basic mods. 1J and 2J engines are equally bulletproof, a stock 2J will run over 600hp with just a big turbo and enough fuel.

The Vauxhall C20LET isn't too bad for an old unit.

204BHP standard book figure.

ECU Tweak, exhaust, induction and you'll see 280BHP.

Few more mods and you're into the 300+ zone.

Lots of conflicting stuff in here.

Tuning with a remap only, N/A mods only, uprating/adding turbos?

The F20C will take an absolute punishment before you need to touch it's internals but quite rightly so - will cost an absolute fortune to wring out even a few BHP with N/A work only.

Then conversely you have the big turbo lumps which are very conservatively mapped which will unlock plenty of power very easily.

If you take my route, 150bhp to 190bhp from a stage one Revo, then Forge 007p, smoothed airbox, step colder plugs, 2.5" SS Catback, KO3's (around 210 -220 at this point), injectors, FRP, K04 and finally FMIC, it should be running around 240 - 250bhp as it stands but i've never stuck it on a RR with all these mods.

Adding an extra 100bhp from stock has changed the car off the line slightly but it still not a light object to get moving and even with the best 225 section front tyres i can fit its still very hard to get all the power down, the real upgrade is in overtaking power which is what matters to me, i'm not bothered about trashing my gearbox due to 0-30 sprints.

some of the audi lumps are epic. look at the 2.7 v6 twin turbo

265bhp standard.

remap = 300-320bhp

rs4 turbos = upto 440-460 with supporting mods

the lump will take it all day long.

bigger turbos again will see you past 500bhp. you wont need to flow the heads until beyond 550bhp. you may need a new clutch, but the rest of the transmission will take it all day long

but ive never had the balls to give it beans off the line. 350lbft, not a single chance of wheelspin... something has to give and im not brave enough to find out what!
