Mechwarrior 4 Free release - Now Available

If what's been uploaded to RS? The torrents have been posted in this thread already. That's the main file. Then there have been two patches since:

Patch 20 not sure what either of these actually do. I thought 18 was to remove the key check and to unlock clan mechs and stuff in the campaign as drops.

Interestingly, the MTX files they use... they are just renamed .zip files. Open them up with your extractor of choice. With the 17 file, which contails the entire game, just extract it somewhere, run MW4mercs.exe and it plays fine. Unfortunately, its not that simple for the two patches, you can unzip them, but they contain a couple of files which apparently need to be unpacked with a different program, which is a whole lot more complicated.

Edit: Also, MW4 was the cartoony one with the arena, right? Mercenaries I think it was subtitled, with a Black Knight expansion. I much preferred 3, but I hear tell a gift horse will bite your face if you look it in the mouth, or something.

I've read people saying it has pretty much every resolution up to 3000, just that one was lacking. However, on my install I'm only getting options for 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768 and 1280x1024.
I'm guessing that one of the patches are needed to unlock more resolutions.

Alternatively, go with the good old fashioned .ini file editing. Optiions.ini in the base directory has the width and height there, just stick in whatever you want. Alt+enter to switch between windowed and full screen.

Yeah, looks seem to be dead. Hoever, there wasn't actually a way to patch them without mtx anyway, because the patch system they use relies on some fancy visualC stuff or something, I won't pretend to know what its on about :D

However, I'm uploading that patch to megaupload at the moment. You just download it, change a reg entry depending where you installed things, run a batch file and copy over some other files. Its 70Mb, so will take me about 15 mins to finish uploading, then I'll post a link+instructions.

Credit for the patch goes to Retro-Future Rodent from SA.

Edit: And yes, the patch does add a ton of resolutions without needing to resort to ini editing!

I'm also including a registry file that you'll need to edit one of line in notepad. Change:
"MTXGamesPath"="E:\\mektek"
to where you've installed mektek. Hopefully with this patch you'll never need to have run MTX, but anyone who has doesn't want to mess up their installation should change that before opening it.

The rest is simple enough:
Open mechwarrior4mercenaries.all.to.51.03.01.0017.mtx with a program that deals with zips. I use 7zip.
Make a folder somewhere on your hard-drive, I used E:\Mechwarrior.
Copy all the files inside the "base" folder into the folder you just made. This can take a while, you're moving just over 2Gb
Copy all the files and folders from my patch zip into the folder that contains MW4Mercs.exe
Run patch.bat and wait for it to finish. Should only take a minute or so and will inform you as each file is patched.
Copy everything in PATCH and paste it over the contents of your Mechwarrior directory, overwriting files.
Run Mechwarrior4.reg

You should now be patched and ready to play, you can delete /patch/, patch.bat and xdelta.

Hope this helps. Again, I can't claim credit for this, I've just re-uploaded it.

Or for people who would rather stick with the official route, MTX is now working, and the mektek website is showing an apache test page, so things are slowly reviving.

Download those two plus the full 1.7Gb game download linked previously in the thread, copy all three .mtx files to wherever you installed MTX, to the folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\mektek.net\MTX\temp\games

Then open MTX, go to the 'games available' tab, and it will show that you can install MW4. Click it, and select to install, and it will install and patch from the .mtx files without any downloading. The game installes to C:\Program Files (x86)\mektek.net\Mechwarrior Mercenaries - Mektek Mekpak

Awesome, just finished the 'unofficial' method and started up :D cheers for the posts.

Didnt end up applying the registry entries though, as reversing the changes might be a pain later on. Are they required for any program functions?
 
I grabbed the initial torrent file but the webby has been down since it finished, no idea how to open and install.. gather I need some kind of proggy to do that ?

As for people having trouble, I'm gonna make a huge post detailing exactly how to get it working. It someone could edit it into the OP when its been done for easier finding or something, that would be handy! ^^
 
How to get Mechwarrior 4 running.

Firstly, download the MTX program, which is used for installing/patching the game. It can be found here:

Essentially, its a combined torrent program and installer, but it has several issues, so its much easier to use your own torrent program instead.

Here is the Game torrent and a mirror. (1.7Gb)

There are currently two patches containing content, bug fixes and the no-cd patch to make it actually free, as the 1.7Gb game is their Mekpak 3.1 which they've modded, requiring the original game CD to run.

Patch 1 and mirror.

Patch 2 and mirror.

Install MTX, then copy the three mtx files you downloaded via torrent into the mektek.net\MTX\temp\games folder, though keep a copy just in case. You can then run MTX, go into the 'Games available' tab, and left click Meckwarrior 4 under 'Games you can install' and select install game. It should then install the game and patch it from the mtx files provided, though it can take a while.


Alternatively, since the MTX program wasn't working while mektek's server was down, there is an alternate option. If you download the 1.7Gb torrent as before, then download this patcher, you can use the patcher as instructed below to patch the files up to the .0020 version that is currently the latest version.

Instructions:

See my post just above, its working perfectly ;)

Only issue I have is the game doesn't like small mouse movements, the sort of small movements you want to make when you're trying to aim at a certain part of an enemy.

Not the slickest install package ever . . . . :D

Just trying to get the game updated through the crappy downloader. That thing is the source of the problems.

If your getting the disc 2 error then right click on the game in MTX and choose update. It should need this 2-3 times. Often wont install the update after downloading it until you restart the MTX program, it then starts unpacking and installing it.
