modding a car

whats with the hating?

surely it's perfectly acceptable to take a 40k car, and then make it more to your tastes yourself?

Of course it is, just would rather buy a car I wouldn't need to spend loads more money on stick on tat.

Then maybe a few years down the line.

It's very unusual though. Not many people do it - so threads asking about are very rare and almost invariably posted by the people with the mindset typical of your average 1500 quid car buyer rather than those with the genuine means to purchase a £40k car.

There are exceptions to every rule, but on the whole by the time you can properly afford a £40,000 car you've rather grown out of such things, or if you ARE into things like perfecting the handling and so on and so forth and you are in the £40k+ car brackets you've probably got a car more suited to it than something like an Infiniti G37.

This is why people who drive around in 10 year old Japanese coupes insist that if they had £40k to spend on a car it'd be a GT-R and a load of mods. Yea, sure, but in reality not many people do that because by the time they climb the ladder of life enough to buy a £40k car, they have changed as people.

I can't remember the last time I saw a brand new premium saloon with an aftermarket bodykit. Infact I don't think I've ever seen it.

Thankfully.

True but Kahn-excepted they tend to be once they've depreciated into the hands of those for whom that sort of thing is excellent.

I'm not saying it never happens - obviously it does, very occasionally, but the chances of this thread being a complete waste of everyones time because the guy is a dreamer OR has discovered if he spends 90% of his takehome pay on a massive finance deal he can have a WELL LEET CAR is unfortunately far greater than the chance of him being a genuinelly wealthy person who fancies a G37.

I'm not even saying its only done by undesireables - far from it. Infact I bought a 'saloon' once and then fitted an exhuast and a bodykit but I was 19 - at the time I'd have told you I'd do the same thing with a £40k car but by the time I get into a position to own one (Not there yet) I somehow doubt I'll be that quick to do it :p

Uh..

What about companies like AC Schnitzer, Hamann and Breyton?
Mariani, ABT, Dinan, MTM..

You mean until very recently sold through BMW dealers as genuine BMW accessories and not aftermarket stuff at all? Now replaced in BMW dealers with BMW Performance - again, not aftermarket?

Perhaps you mean people like Hartge, Hamann? In which case yes, like them. I have never, ever seen a nearly new or new car with any Hartge styling on it. They must number less than 10 in the entire country. Which is my point, not that it never happens, but that it happens so little that there is little chance this guy means business.

How can you say AC Schnitzer is not aftermarket?!

They are a third-party tuning company based in Aachen. They specialise in BMW and MINI but they are in no way related to BMW AG. Just because dealers (in the UK, which I didn't know about) sell some of their tat, doesn't mean it's not aftermarket

So just because you haven't seen any cars with aftermarket modifications on means that this guy can't be serious.
Awesome.

Quite rare tbh.
and?
If you're going to spend £40k on an Infiniti then these are the sort of companies you will be going to, not Dave's Tuning.

By typing 'AC Schnitzer were not aftermarket' and pressing the 'Submit' button.

They had a longstanding relationship with BMW to the extent that you could order ACS parts as part of a new vehicle order, and the only real way of obtaining ACS parts in the UK was through a BMW franchised dealers parts department. BMW UK also published ACS accessory catalouges. I have one here.

So just because you haven't seen any cars with aftermarket modifications on means that this guy can't be serious.

Awesome.

If you cannot be bothered to read and attempt to understand my point, please do me the courtesy of simply ignoring me. I made it abundantly clear what my point was and have used terms like 'unlikely' enough times. You even quoted me saying it!

I said there is LITTLE CHANCE he is serious, not that he 'can't' be serious.

The point is they are rare, not that they are specialist or anything.
Look at the op, does it scream 'i'm gonna take this to a specialist'?

Nobody said you can't. Just that it's not normal for a standard saloon.
Could buy a decent looking car to start with for that price.

What I find unbelievable is Fox being adamant that AC Schnitzer parts are not aftermarket.

Are they OEM? No.
Oh, that must make them aftermarket.
No.

Oh.
