How do you envisage the results of general election effecting YOU ?

MUMPS is a DBMS used by Emis LV (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MUMPS)

I've done various bits of pieces and support for them over the years. Now currently working with the hosted systems so no longer customer facing any more.

Oh and Scoobydoo since you last mentioned where i work I did Engineer Support for a while, and have since met Cordell you asked about last time !

O right wicked. Rubbish isn't he :D lol

Very little, I avoid using government services as much as possible because they are so crap.

Unless it's Labour that gets in, in which case by 2012 we'll probably be in concentration camps for thought crime.

A few of our competitiors do.

But to be honest its not that big of an issue. The few PCTs who really do have an issue with giving users local admin rights have found ways round it. They grant the user local admin rights but then use AD group policy to block the stuff they dont want the user to have access to, but whilst still letting them work.

the ones who care about their security policy like Sunderland and Leicestershire do.

They have very strict policies and use AD to enforce them. A lot of the london based PCTs are getting into it too. I think theres 2 or 3 now that have contracted out their support desk to another 3rd party private company and they have rolled out the security and AD as the people at the PCT plain and simply didnt have the knowledge or expertise to do it. I had a chat with them and the horror stories they found when doing the consultation on what needed doing was horrendous.

Worst story of the lot was the doctor using a 3G Dongle on his work PC as he found he wasnt getting enough speed on hir torrents lol.

Yeah we found many ways around it, still makes me chuckle when I watch process monitor and see it accessing the joystick port!

We're running AD in some sites.. not enough yet though!!

which Software ? LV ? its a horrible piece of software and belongs with the dinosaurs. Its fundamentally a serial based terminal application and has no place in the modern windows computing environment

but as is so often the case with healthcare, the doctors dig their feet in and dont want change....

as mentioned earlier a few of the london based ones have contracted their helpdesk role out to the same 3rd party private company

And they've done the rollout.

Somtimes it takes somebody from outside of healthcare with more normal views as to what is considered good IT security practice to shake things up.

Yup LV, but seen it happen on PCS before too. We're one of the PCTs who are desperately trying to get some sort of security into the GP sites rather than just a single login for all the users with full admin rights!!

If I'm honest I think that Emis should have upgraded all LV sites to PCS for a small fee.. if only it was actually a simple process to do so.

The main thing with the elections I think is of course cut backs, so advancements may not be permitted in the future due to lack of budgets. There's also the possibility of a new government cancelling current national schemes..

Being completely honest, even if we offered free migrations to PCS, huge swathes of GPs wouldnt take it purely because they dont want to and like LV and feel scared by new technology.

I had a practice turn down and request the removal of 20 brand new PCs... just because they didnt like the fact the monitors were widescreen instead of 4:3.

Naturally of course, PCT told em to get stuffed. But it makes me laugh how stuck in their ways they are.
