Digital Economy Bill passed through the Lords

So the section in the Act that allows the Government to blocks sites is not in the bill? it is and they can.

In other news the Liberal Democrats have promised to repeal the law should they get into power. Two problems with that. One: They need to get into power. Two: Like all other parties election promises it is just fairy dust and will never happen even if they did get into power.

Three: For all their talk they didn't turn up to vote the first time.

Just about the only thing I get off torrent is a certain island-based TV programme. I used to watch it on channel 4. Channel 4 then stopped showing it. I don't have SKY and never ever will. It's not my fault that I took time to watch a prog on C4 only for it to get moved. **** Channel 4 and **** Sky!

We were unaware that there was going to be a vote on the Bill until only an hour beforehand.
It doesn't make their non attendance completely excuseable but it was expected the vote would have been seperately scheduled. The reason it was pushed through on the night was because so many MP's had returned back to their constituencies.

Didn't anyone see this happening, they'll block the illegal stuff, but the person that blocks youtube will come under seige. There will be an angry riot.

After all, all thats going to happen is illegal downloads will be stopped. Yes its unfair, but if you'd just created a masterpeice that you could sell for hundreds of millions, and it gets leaked on the net, you'd be pretty ****** off.

it wont stop anything... there's just soooo many ways to download.. they cant stop.. unless they go back to the stone age.. and even then i bet i could get some wifi signal from the ground ;)

Maybe so, but it will stop the people that do it half hartedly - the other people, that will risk the warning will stop. And thats better than nothing.

What supprises me is, they haven't shut down sites that are blatently sharing this stuff. I could name at least 5.

I'm suspicious its even as rife as people think it is. At least it doest appear to be in the western richer nations. If you get vague figures, most of its from poorer nations.

Even so its a bill of madmen, how will they know if they've succeeded with it? What damage could it cause?

Australia are doing it as well, its been delayed right now. Though thats for child porn. No doubt it will block other things as well

So they are a step behind us then, the UK already does that, along with quite a few other websites ("terrorist" ones etc).
