Avatar - Bluray.

The bit at the start where it pans around the ship is a jaw dropper
;)

Check the bit where the samson lands during the first sortie, just before Grace tells Wainfleet to stay with the ship, he looks like he's been cut out and stuck on to the front of the screen.

Though however bad that is you have to be looking to notice it.

My current favourite part on the Blu Ray is the introduction of Neytiri, most notably her facial close ups, more specifically at the end of her vs viperwolves she "snarles" and the sheer level of facial realism is incredible, also little things like her lips and teeth are frighteningly real, at times it's hard to believe it's all CG.

In 9 years, we went from this being the pinnacle of realistic CGI:

Looks alright but is still rather uncanny valley and really a bit dodgy but I remember watching that and being blown away.

To this:

I think obviously you have to remove a few points from Avatar simply because of the "scenic route" they took around the Uncanny Valley, I don't think 9ft tall blue cat people fit into the curve very well.

Regardless of that however, just look at the difference in definition of facial structure, imperfections and removal of symmetry, look at Jakes teeth or the veins in his ears.

Maybe it's just me but every time I look at this it blows my mind.

Things have obviously moved forward, but don't forget that Avatar had a far bigger budget than Final Fantasy. Had FF had a similar budget, then we could genuinely compare the 2, in terms of technological progress.

The hair of the female in your first pic is still impressive. In fact to me, her hair looks more impressive than the hair of the picture below. The movements/motion in Avatar is far superior, though.

Yeah the animation is where it's at imo. Especially the banshees, you can see the looseness of the skin on the skeleton. Minor details like that get me every time. A noticeable poor CGI bit is the guy in the dump truck when they show the mine for the first time with all the heavy machinery in the background. Looks like they used a video game asset lol.

Also the bit where Jake is "praying" to Ewya before the big battle is spectacular in high def.

The attention to detail is amazing, even shadows are cast off CGI on real objects and vice versa.

Could that be an artifact from 3D to 2D?

got it on bluray despite a summer re- release (which i wont get) and watched it for the second time on sat - have to say liked it more second time around. and the bluray is stunning in PQ and SQ.

PQ on our Toshiba 46" LCD outstanding as was the sound through the Onkyo amp.

I'd still only rate it 3 stars for movie, pretty much what I felt after watching at the cinema. 15 - 20 mins too long and very derivative of Dances With Wolves plus (if anyone remembers them) the Andre Norton Janus novels.

Watched it over the weekend, first on the pc, a few slight pauses here and there, pq was outstanding, then tried it on my 1080p 32" lcd telly, looked even better again. As mentioned a few times in this thread, it did remind me of dances with wolves also.

Just bought this on Blu Ray.

When i go to play it using ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre 3 Platinum, it cracks up and jogs as if it can't handle it.

I patched the program and now when i restart (it says you have to), it won't start windows. Instead of getting the login screen you just get a black screen with the cursor.

I have to restore back to be able to get into windows.

I can get into Safe Mode however.

Does anyone have any tips?

Thanks

apparantly that Beta patch doesn't work for everyone (basically it's a bit hit and miss!). I had the decoding issue with TMT3, but after patching it kinda works now lol I can load windows fine so not the same issue you have but when I load TMT3, it seems to stop responding as soon as i click play or settings. Restarting the PC and loading TMT3 first seems to do the job though and I watched the film from start to finish with no issues

powerDVD and winDVD both work no problems from what I've seen and anyDVD HD has also been patched to work. Arcsoft will have a proper patch out soon though

I watched this again for about the 5th time last night on BR, the graphics still look amazing. :)

I've noticed though, there are a lot of recycled sound effects from Jurassic Park - anyone else noticed that? Particularly the banshees which seem to make the same sounds as velociraptors, but there were a few other creatures too.

Edit: Yes lots of other folks seem to have noticed this too.

The Hammerhead Things = Brontosaurus
Flying things = Baby T-Rex
Black Catlike Predator = T-Rex
Horse/Anteater Thing = Velociraptors

The scene "Viperwolves" (the bit where Jake is fighting off those black beasties with the torch) is an utter testament to surround sound. You really feel immersed in the action as if you actually are surrounded by all kinds of unspeakable creatures.

Then the following scene "Neytiri" causes your jaw to drop at the visual spectacle of the forest lit up at night.

What a fantastic blu-ray. :)
