Audi A3 3.2 and VW R32 and a Leon K1

2008 Civic, 2005 A3 ... 2003 Golf....... In that order, sorry to break your Audi rose tinted glasses :p ;)
The Honda just felt more solid, nice switch gear operation etc......
Also had the best seats...... (both myself and the girlfriend are seating engineers !!! :p )
Like I said didn't drive it....might do tomorrow.

I don't have Audi rose tinted glasses, just experience of all 3 cars (Actually not the R32, just a regular GTI Mk4 Golf) and the Civic quality levels were poor - I wrote as much in a review I did of it about 2 years ago.

I appreciate that everyone has different opinions but I am just at a loss to explain why you might have found the build quality in a Civic better than that of the current shape Audi A3..

I am completely unbiased as none of these are cars I would want to own.

Fox has far from Audi rose tinted Glass's he is not a major fan of Audi full stop, even if the civic is 08 plate its still Japanese certainly not in the germans league for build quality.

That's why the automotive industry follows the Japanese quality and manufacturing model and principles !!!!

The difference are down to cost not engineering or quality, ie how much money did they allow for each component to suit the market sector they are selling.

Sorry "Jap crap" is so 1980's...... and if you think all the parts are made in Germany, dream on ...hahaha

edit.
The A3 has pre facelift nose, if that helps date it.... Ie not current shape front end.

Two types of quality - actual quality and perceived quality. The Japs have actua quality nailed - but the Germans have it on perceived quality. Although its not really the case - it'll break long before the Japanese car - the Audi has higher perceived quality. The doors close with a 'thunk'. The plastics used within the interior of higher quality and the switchgear is better.

WOW WHAT A POST.

Or he could just buy one of the other cars on his shortlist, the Audi A3

Oh come on...you've lost your sense of humour now. I haven't had a dig at you for months about your E39 blinkers.

Just thought i'd pipe up here, I drove a 56plate S Line A3 when i was looking for a new car about 6 months ago, the 2.0 TFSI DSG model.

I was disappointed by the interior quality to say the least, there wasn't anything 'wrong' with it, i just felt it didn't live up to the hype around the Audi brand.

I ended up with a Honda, an Integra DC5 and while a totally different kind of car i found the interior, while a lot blander to be of equal/better quality to the Audi

I also looked at the current shape Civic type R's (FN2) and while they are a bit of a 'sea of plastic' i'd have rather one of them than the A3 i think.

Fair enough Fox...I'm only having a laugh. I've said it before, I think you've impeccable taste in cars.

I'd have all three in question here. A3 probably most sensible as a buy...R32 might hold it's value better?

The A3 also has the Haldex 4WD. The looks thing is highly subjective. There are also likely to be some suspension differences and the interior will be better in the Audi but (unless the original owner hit the option list hard) the spec is likely to be slightly less.

Edit: there may be differences (I'm not 100% sure) between the haldex versions under discussion if we're talking MKIV golf and 8P A3.

the 1.8T A3, S3, Mk4 R32 all have same Haldex - 30% max power to rear (I have performance part in my mk1 TT tho 60% rear)

The 2.0T A3, S3, mk5 R32 have teh newer one. Cant remember but think 60/40

Well looks like the Audi got sold to someone over the weekend, saves me a decision... lol.
And had a call from the second SEAT garage, wanting my custom all of a sudden..... So sent them away to try and work out a good deal on a White K1.

Also found a Cupra that has been mod'ed........ Stage one chip, 19 inch wheel, K1 body kit, twin pipe exhaust, custom leather re-trim.... plus it's had 3 track days !!! Needs a new clutch... So bet wary of this one.....

No haldex unit can give higher power to the rear wheels that the fronts if all wheels have grip. The differences in versions are in the way the power is transferred to the rear wheels (i.e. what sensors, steering angle etc are used to work out the transfer needed) and the amount of time the clutch pack takes to close to transfer maximimum power aft from a standing start (Pre-x and gen 4 haldex this isnt an issue because the system is primed with an electric pump). Your HPP perfomance controller just closes the clutch pack earlier to give a more agressive power transfer it doesn't make the car rear biased.

I've never quite understood the idea of settling for a car simply because it's close by. If you want a 3.2 A3, find a good one and travel for it, rather than settling for something else just because its there.

Definitely be wary of it, sounds horrible.

Exactly this. I always wonder if people who are so unfussed about what it is they actually want that they'll completely change the type of car just because it pops up 3 miles down the road really need to buy such a car at all.

If you want a hot hatch, great, decide which one you want and buy your favourite. Dont settle for something else for silly reasons.

Who said I wouldn't travel !?!?!?!? The A3-3.2 was on my door step and I found it by chance, as I not thought of one before. So I tried it.
I am simply looking around at what car options I can find that my take my fancy. Once I have decided on one I normally scour the country for the best option, or certainly get a "local" one priced matched.
