I continue to be amazed at the level of support for the Lib Dems given their crazy defence policies :o
That's because clearly a lot of people don't think they're crazy, or rate defence as a low issue. It may surprise you, but different people have different priorities

I should imagine he's referring to cancelling the order for the remaining eurofighters, not replacing trident and kissing goodbye to the new carriers.
Cancelling tranche 3 of the Eurofighters, along with the A400M orders just makes sense. Not sure about the carriers.

Is there any reason the Lib-Dems couldn't form a coalition with the Conservatives? I was going to vote Lib-Dem, but if they are just going to ally with Labour then I won't bother.

I can't stand that smarmy **** Cameron, it's going to make me throw if I have to vote for them :(

The main reason is that Cameron won't go into a coalition Lib-dem unless they roll over completely

"He does not share power" ;)

Oh dear dirtydog, you disappear for months and when you do resurface you aptly remind us all why no one missed you in the first place.

Go back under your rock, at least it's warm under there.

Thank **** the election is only once every 4-5 years. There's been far too much ignorance and bias in these threads of late.

I should imagine he's referring to cancelling the order for the remaining eurofighters, not replacing trident and kissing goodbye to the new carriers. All of which would have a significant impact on the role the U.K plays in the world, power projection capabilities and the defence of overseas territories (we simply couldn't re-take the falklands without a carrier group).

I'm not aware that the LibDems have stated their policy on the new aircraft carriers. The eurofighter is a cold war relic, and if we don't really need any more of them then the contract should be cancelled - the UK government shouldn't be giving into bullying from quasi-American defence contractors like BAE Systems over this. A like-for-like Trident replacement is not the only answer, I'm glad one political party has the balls to question the consensus on this.

Power projection and being a major international player on the defence stage is all very well and good, but we simply can't afford to do it as we have been any more. Cuts have to be made, if that means we become less important in the geopolitical arena then so be it.

Offering people in illegal situations sensible routes out makes much more sense than simply ignoring the problem.

Erm there is a 3rd option - enforcing the law and deporting illegal immigrants. Not rolling out the red carpet and making us more of a soft touch than we already are.

They are not questioning the consensus, they are unilaterally deciding that there should not be a like-for-like Trident replacement.
Lib Dem Manifesto said:
Saying no to the like-for-like replacement of the Trident nuclear weapons system
The defence review will establish what the alternatives are, and there are none that offer the same level of reaction or projection without increasing cost or strategic vulnerability.

If it was that easy someone would have done it already. With no exit controls the UK quite simply doesn't know how many people are here illegally, or where they've gone, and there is currently no incentive to come forward so how are you going to find them? Ignoring the fact that there is already a 14 year back door into staying in this country any such "amnesty" as proposed by the Lib Dems should be alongside increased and more effective border controls (which is what they've said isn't it?)
