Volvo Polestar C30 AWD 400+ Bhp

That's not a reason though .... the STi is SUB £28k ...
The Evo starts at £30k

And both are from small makers, Ford have the economy of scale on their side especially since the car is based on the Focus.

The Ford C1 platform, most OEMs use it throughout with some changing the floor rear of the row 2 heel plate to allow a different wheelbase/cargo capacity (see EUCD for the effect turning a Mondeo into a Freelander.

Now if you are going to suggest that a Ford Focus C1 platform that has no AWD brother or sisters will be cheap to tool up for a new rear end and subframe for a limited run of cars you need to get real experience of what actually happens after uni.

The economy of scale is what makes the rest of the car cheap so a bespoke rear end would only serve to make the cost difference even more significant!

Subaru and Miti start off with the BIW ready for a AWD platform at significant production numbers and then they are made outside the EU.

it would have required a very costly adaptation that probably wouldnt have been recouped over the limited the production run of the RS granted

but its not like the technology to do it doesnt exist.

Although I'm part of the 4WD brigade I appreciate that you can't really compare Subaru and Mitsubishi offerings to Ford. The Lancer and Impreza were always going to have 4WD options so the chassis was built accordingly.

I was under the impression that the new Focus was able to accept 4WD without fuss but I could be wrong. I was surprised when a lad I knew who worked in Ford R&D told me 18 months before it came out it was FWD (No one believed me)

You will never see 4WD specials like the Nissan GTIR again.

Janesy was making out like Ford couldnt have done it even if they wanted to because they havent got a 4x4 system to put into the focus thats all i was pointing out :p

The Kuga is AWD, and that is on the C1, as is the V50, S40.

So want to try that one again about there being no AWD variant of C1 (remember EUCD is related to C1)

I guess you have got me there. Silly really as I was in one yesterday!

They only get away with that due to the ground clearance and small poncy rear diff, anything with serious rear bias and big power will need a totally different solution. Have you seen the pencil thin driveshafts?

Did everyone forget that there WAS a prototype WITH AWD (haldex), but didn't drive how the engineers wanted the car to be?

So I'm not so sure how a lot of people can blatantly say 'it would have been better with AWD'.

It's a combination of cost and the dynamics they wanted. That's why there's no AWD.

Shush, the internet knows better ;)

So Fords best engineers couldn't get a 4WD car to perform how they wanted it to so they took out 2 driveshafts?

OK.

It looks nice I grant you that but its a poor reflection of more traditional rally inspired cars of the past.

More of a gimmic than anything else.

Gimmic? :/

It's a Focus RS, NOT a Focus Cosworth. I don't remember the Escort and Fiesta RS Turbos being AWD ;)

Driveshafts and diffs can be beefed up a bit ...

Relating to gimmic or not ...
The RS is a gimmic, the Mazdaspeed 3 and the ST are better cars to drive and live with.
The RS with AWD, set to compete vs the STi and Evo would have been a different beast (and remember, Evo's AWD is FWD based, just like the old Toyota Celica systems)
