5D MKII...

Haven't you gone from 500D - 7D - 1D MKIII in a year?

Now you want a 5D MKII?

Is it really that hard to stick with one for a while, I can't see the point in changing so quickly between them if you ask me.

Just my two cents.

EDIT: Infact, you've from from 500D - 7D - 1D MKIII in 5 months. And now want a 5D MKIII after 6 months?

I bought the 500D as my first DSLR (end of Oct last year) to see if it was for me (the DSLR way that is), quickly found out I did like it and that the 500D wasn't that great for sports or keeping up with the little 'un so I bought the 7D. More than happy with the 7D to be honest, but when the opportunity to trade for a 1D mkIII came along I went for it (after much agonising!). Not exactly a mindless rush for new kit, but I see where you're coming from. I don't believe I'll ever be a good photoghrapher no matter what kit I have, but the 1D sure helps offset my own lack of speed! :D

A 5D mkII won't suit me for sports or toddlers but I like what I see with FF. I've had a good look at the D700 reviews today but a whole change of system is a step to far, even for me ;) So you'll be happy to know that I'm (probably) not going to change anytime soon. Although a second hand 5D wouldn't amiss sometime in the future.... :)

No offense but my 5 year old 350d can shoot sports and keep up with little 'uns;) Upgrade by all means but make sure it's really the camera that's holding you back, the 500d is very capable to any amateur photographer. What lenses do you have?

I could take pictures with the 500D, but not to the standard I got with the 7D or 1D. The servo AF just isn't in the same class which is expected. I don't know what I am doing wrong then as I find it more difficult to get pictures of my daughter than I do at the Rugby! :D

Currently I have a 24-70 f2.8, 50 f1.8 and a 70-200 f2.8.

Haven't you heard the saying? Never work with Children or Animals. The same goes for even your own kid. I do however, still want a kid when I am stable financially, then have plenty of photos of them :D You just need a good form of distraction to capture a nice shot. Tried coloured feather duster or something? It worked for me during a shoot involving kids!!

mrthingyx - Is switching that many cameras so quickly needed?

Rojin hasn't had the 1D for a month. Nor was the 500D owned for more than a month for what I can remember.

I'm not trying to start an arguement - but I think perhaps you should give something more time and give the actual shot/composition more thought, rather than switching camera all the time.

The gear isn't the focus, the photographer is.

I'm new to DSLR territory in terms of actually owning the hardware (last December), but I've played with photography for a long time from my dad's old Canon FD film camera through to configurable compacts (both electronic and digital) through to the Canon 5D Mark2 (and spent a lot of time with xxxDs and that Mk2).

Having worked with the 20D for that time on a variety of lenses (on loan from my brother - Sigma 50mm EX, Canon 70-200L/24-70L, etc.), I know that I'd like a higher frame rate (for sports and catching my 2yr-old daughter out) in the next body.

However, before that I know I need a quality, fast lens that goes beyond 200mm...

The only thing stopping me is finances, which means I have to practice a lot with my current lens, the Canon 50mm f1.8. Which is a good thing (as I can't see the current setup changing for at least 12 months)...

What I meant to say was that - even when comparatively new to photography - it's not difficult (IMHO) for somebody to be able to identify things that work better for them (or would/might) and if they have the finances to pay for it, I think it's entirely reasonable if they're using the camera a lot...?

I don't mean to suggest Rojin's approach is right/wrong - only that I can see why he/she might be adopting it...

Auto-focus performance on the 5D II really is poor by today's standard, I still can't believe they didn't upgrade it. Certainly the worst aspect of the 5D II.

They dont want any of their cameras to be all things for everyone, or their other models would not sell, i.e. the 7D.

For example, I rarely need the autofocus performance to be great. In fact, I could get by quite happily focusing manually. I just need the quality to be great and the wide lenses to be wide. The 5D is for me.

Which raises the point that the next 5D incarnation will certainly have an AF update, usnig the 7D's focusing no less i expect and surely that will kill off the 7D, and in a lot of respect, the need for a 1D series camera.

Then the Nikon side will say that Canon have finally caught up with the D700 after 3/4 years or something lol

Trust me, it can't.

I've gone 350D -> 40D and now 40D + 7D.

The different in AF tracking ability is HUGE.

As for the op, no idea to be honest, I find that my 7D + bounced flash serves me more than well enough in dark situations!

The next 5D incarnation will almost certainly kill the 7D, but not the next 7D incarnation, nor the next in the 1D series.

How you interpret the endless succesion of new superior cameras defines you as a phorographer or a gearhead, or a few shades of grey in between those two.

The 7D is £1200 the 5D II is still £1700. The 7D is 8fps, 5D 4fps. The 1.6x crop of the 7D works in it's favour for sports and wildlife.

Given that the 5D III will be vastly more expensive I don't see how giving it decent AF focus will kill off the 7D, they are for totally different things. And you just don't give it the pro features of the 1 series.

Priceless! I've been lazy with the flash since I stuck a Stofen diffuser on there. I haven't been that happy with results of late but hadn't gone back to just bouncing without the stofen. What with doing that and going back to manual mode, much better! Cheers :)

I always take with me a stofen to weddings, and everytime i will try the first shot with it in the evening and then try it without by bouncing and everytime so far i end up bouncnig the flash for the rest of the evening. Same goes with the Fong, tupperware are just no good, bounce or "throw it back" is the best way.
