Or more likely, lib/lab coalition would continue increasing debt and be seen as heroes because no one lost their job... meanwhile, the national financial status continues to deteriorate horrifically, ready for the Conservatives to fix and be hated for reducing debt and public spending

You've obviously never followed Australian politics. The Liberals and Nationals traditionally campaign as a coalition. It's never a case of the Liberals saying "Oh noes, we didn't get enough votes, now we're forced to form a coalition." They always enter the election with the Nationals as their pre-selected coalition partner, campaign together as allies, share voting preferences and form a coalition government when they win. IIRC, Australia has not seen a hung parliament at the federal level since 1940 (though 1960 was a very close call).

Of course it is. No system's perfect. But PR is still better than FPTP.

If the coalition is standard, then its a 2 party system effectively since no one else has been getting a seat recently.

In a 2 party system you always have a majority.

In the UK we have 3 parties winning seats. So its completely different. No one campaigns as a coalition.

Oh I agree, that's how they will try and spin it. Lab-Lib will go 1 of 2 ways; they'll either do the right thing which means savage cuts and tax rises which will be deeply unpopular. Or they'll maintain the current Labour mantra of ignoring the problem which will inevitably cause a run on the pound and the loss of the AAA rating which will also be catastrophic. It's win-win for the tories if they play the long game :)

Not if they keep us in dreamworld until the next election which ends up being a Tory victory and they inherit a country in a state of even more ruin than they may have inherited today.

I can't see much way around this without the Tories getting the blame for doing what needs to be done and it is rather depressing.

But they can't keep us in dreamworld for another 5 years, the markets will crumble under the debt :)

I do however agree that the public are idiots and won't for one second consider who got us into this mess when voting in the future.

how can the tories get the blame for anything, they haven't got any power so can't do anything:confused:

maybe the 'public' actually wants a part of each manifesto. Why can't the parties compromise?

Anecdotal evidence IS over-conclusion formed by fact!! Just read about it! Just google 'anecdotal evidence' if you don't believe me!!! We're going round in circles here.

'I saw someone getting punched down the pub'

That is a fact

'Therefore it is a rough pub'

THAT is using anecdotal evidence. The fact someone got punched is NOT BEING DISPUTED.

'PR works somewhat in Australia'

That is a fact

'Therefore it's a groovy form of government for the UK / anywhere else/ DOESN'T cause a load more hung parliaments'

That is using anecdotal evidence. The fact PR somewhat works in Australia IS NOT BEING DISPUTED.

If I find a SINGLE COUNTRY in which PR was a disaster of hung parliaments, then say 'Therefore this proves the whole system sucks for the entire world' -- THAT is using ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE! Geddit? Please say yes!

Jeesh!
I've provided you more facts, more examples of where strong economies using PR have successfully formed strong governments. I can go on providing you with facts, or you can get your head out of your backside and have a look for yourself to see that PR works in several countries around the world, including leading economies.

21 out of 36 since 1919 were coalitions???????

So? Coalition government has been proven to be successful in many parliaments, including some of the strongest economies in the world: the Nordic countries, Benelux, Austria, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Switzerland, Japan, Turkey, Israel, New Zealand, Kosovo, Pakistan, Kenya, and India.

My constituency now has a 20,000 Conservative majority, I assure you, not all the public want a piece of each parties manifesto. Compromise just leads to a silly mess where things get argued about for days on end and nothing much is achieved. As I say though, i'm more than happy for Lab-Lib to take the next parliament and look forward to the following Tory landslide.
