Vimeo v Youtube?

Vimeo is slow, offers poor quality, has a childish UI, has limited content and is poorly supported.

YouTube on the other hand is fast, offers decent quality, has a smooth and modern UI, has tons of stuff and can be used on pretty much any device you can imagine these days.

YouTube is the clear winner.

"Limited content" utter rubbish. a lot of excellent videos are found only on vimeo you just need to look harder ;)

I think YouTube fails hard when it comes to UI. It is a complex site now, but given how much money Google has, all facets should be spot on.

The constant re-arranging and overhauling of their core Flash video interface seems like flailing in the dark. I get some stupid tortoise/hare thing intermittently grafted on to the play button. Yesterday it got a completely new video interface and now I check and I'm getting some old one again.

Vimeo rocks, much better PQ. It isn't slower either, look how big the file sizes are, this reflects in the quality. The problem is probably with your slow internet connection.

The way I see it, youtube = amateur, vimeo = professional. I'd like to see vimeo tags on here, lots of good stuff on there.

new youtube - fail

vimeo was always good for certain videos.. but youtube has all the "every Day" videos if you know what i mean.. its usable.. but new changes have not improved anything.

Just checked out Vimeo and its absolutely pants.

Really? Obviously didn't check very hard... ;)

Youtube is for the "haha, just caught my friend falling over!11!" and the "look, I can sing badly into my webcam!" whereas Vimeo is for the "I've spent hours carefully filming on a professional video camera and tens of hours editing to get a two minute work of HD art" and "Just a film I made on my 5D mk2 to go with my stunning photos of a rare arctic fox".:p

Youtube is good for a quick flick through whereas Vimeo is for those that want to go "Wow!" The interface and IQ is much better too (partly because most of the stuff is filmed in HD with very expensive equipment.

I guess another way of thinking about it is youtube is the 4chan of the video world, whereas Vimeo is the Boston Big Picture (the photoserieses commonly posted on here of things like Afghanistan).

I'm just gonna throw this out there.

The layout on youp*rn is better than youtube.

It's got big tabs, a huge button for your favorites, why do i need to go to my account, then click on favorites in youtube, it should just be right there.

Everything is right where you need it, youtube is too many clicks now.

.

The problem is the huge number of images on the website that require downloading and then rendering in the browser, not the buffering of the video itself, but the time it takes to get around to it.

In which case you need to get either a better web browser or a faster internet connection.

Fresh pages load in less than two seconds for me, on IE8 and a 4Mb line...

Fresh pages load in less than two seconds for me, on IE8 and a 4Mb line...

Typical Vimeo page 1,790,299 bytes
Typical Youtube page, 766,534 bytes

Takes 2.33x as long to load based on bandwidth alone.

So on a 4Mb connection it would take 3.58 seconds to load the vimeo page and 1.53 to load the youtube page.

So no it has nothing to do with the browser or slow internet connection, just simple maths.

I will concede that vimeo has a major plus point in that videos don't play automatically. The web design 101 lesson that google failed to attend is, DON'T PLAY VIDEOS AUTOMATICALLY, there is nothing worse than clicking on a video link, especially middle clicking it to be blasted by the loud volume of someones crappy mic. Major minus points for vimeo not buffering the video before you decide to play it though, that's basic stuff.

Quite agree with Amp34.

YouTube's is fast being crammed with so much crap that it resembles Apple's Appstore. It's all the teenyboppers who have just 'discovered the interwebs' just creating stupid videos half the time. Don't get me started on the godawful layout changes. Vimeo isn't bad at all and I love the design of the place. There are a heap of great videos there. It seems to be taking off in the states much faster than europe right now.

I want to Youtube to stay on top... but because I love Vimeo.

Right now Vimeo has fantastic, original content. They block the general river of crap that Youtube et al host. If it becomes too popular, I don't want the crap from Youtube spilling over into Vimeo!

To be honest as soon as I tried to play a video, and was unable to fast forward to a particular minute, until it had buffered to that point, I didn't bother looking around anymore.

Probably one of worst things ever, not being able to fast forward to a specific time.

Therefore, yes it is pants :)

Still, loading the (uncached) front page takes less than 2 seconds on a 4Mb line and then clicking on another video takes less than 2 seconds to load that page it's on.

Either way the quality of what is on them is vastly different and Vimeo gives you more control over the video.

The only issues I have with Vimeo are the stupidly massive writing the descriptions are in and the occasional issue in full screen mode of the video pausing while the audio carries on playing.

Never noticed that before, but then i've never wanted to fast forward in a video on there.
