*** The Official HTC Desire (Bravo) Thread! ***

I couldn't be bothered waiting for O2 so decided to just go with Vodafone and get one yesterday!

First impressions are good and I can see that Android is much more flexible and open than the iPhone, and technically the phone seems very strong compared to my iPhone 3G.

However - it's a steep learning curve from my iPhone. I'm sure i'll get used to it but I found my iPhone much easier to get used to and more intuitive.

Well first Google will release 2.2, then we'll have to wait for HTC to "Sense" it up, then you can either put HTC's version on or wait for your network to produce their branded version.

I'd wager there'll be minimal delay between the initial release and HTC's Sense version but then the delay in the network branded versions is anyone's guess. Hopefully they'll not take too long so as not to risk any bad press for such a "prestige" handset.

If your rooted thats true, if not then you will likely have to wait for your network to release the update. When Google releases 2.2 thats the time to root!

I thought that people were flashing the generic HTC ROM over T-Mobile versions without root (Both are HTC signed the theory is sound) ? If so the same could be repeated with 2.2, although it would have to be done manually, as the the update wouldn't magically appear over the air :)

I was amazed, even the box is totally plain HTC. It doesnt even have a Vodafone sticker on it - nor any Vodafone material in the box.

Yeah, normally VF phones are stuffed to the max with their software/branding.

You know I can see why people like the iphone so much using this phone, everything just works out of the box..im having more and more issues with crashes and things not working as time goes on

None here, your doing something wrong.

I think its ridiculous that i cant send mp3s via bluetooth yet can receive them fine. Even sending pictures is a pita. Whats the official word on this if there is one, will it be included in the 2.2 update. Even my 5yr old phone out does the desire in this aspect. Not impressed.

Oh I thought only the iphone had these restrictions:confused: I just presumed all other phones could transfer files this way. So what can't the Desire do in this respect?

Have you tried changing the file extension?

Ordered one of those Android printed neoprene pouches from the Bay yesterday. Being posted tomorrow from HK. Estimate of delivery time? Last time I ordered from HK on eBay, it took 2 weeks. :/

I was planning on posting a reply to the AMOLED = overrated comment but forgot :p

Quite how you can say the image and text quality is bad compared to an LCD phone screen is bizarre because the screens used on the Desire, N1/Incredible/Evo etc are absolutely amazing for text quality, crispness and colour.

Image quality in Android 2.1 is slightly worse using the Android gallery viewer than in 2.0 but Google know about this and are due to fix it in 2.2. Something to do with the bitdepth it displays in not being as high as 2.0.

HTC's image viewer however doesn't seem to exhibit the same issue with the same random photos (I use both).

Does this prevent unwanted email address's from gmail showing up in the compose message field? If it does, could you go through it again please?

This is how I'm set up atm. I've made a group in gmail through the bowser, named it 'Phone'. When adding a contact on the Desire, I set it to google account instead of the phone and place the contact in the 'Phone' group. In the 'View' settings, all I have ticked is 'Google' and unticked the 'Show auto Gmail contacts'.

In gmail contacts, all I have is the default groups and the group I've made, no contacts are in the defalt groups. I only use it for phone contacts which I want to back up. The unwanted email address's are say, the people I email when buying on the OcUK MM. They automatically go in the 'Most Contacted' group and don't show up on the phone list. Though I want to get rid of them in the compose message bit, is it possible?

I don't actually know as I don't keep unsaved addresses in Gmail as I remove them once done! ut I would not have thought this method would fix that unless you remove the addresses in Gmail too.

As griffo says, you don't need to be rooted to install a generic HTC ROM for the Desire as people are doing this now to remove their network branding. I think you'd need to be rooted to flash a totally generic non-HTC 2.2 image.

You don't need to see why it's so popular, it's pretty obvious, it is afterall an iPod with a phone added on. It's great but not that great at actually being a "phone" however.

Curiously, where do you think the iPhone falls down on phoning people?

Random Q: Has anyone tried PDA Net for Android? Or similar internet tethering programs?

I've used it briefly on the Magic but preferred Wireless Tether for Root users.

As for the iPhone, the people I know with one complain about the phone aspect itself not being logical enough or the voice quality not being as high as they expected and then there's the dropping of calls if the signal gets a little weak.

Don't want derail this thread but, I currently have an iPhone (on Orange), and have had this issue with calls with low signal. Sometime they won't even go through even though I have connection.

Been reading up on flashing (from Orange) to a generic rom .... gulp looks rather complex ... although not too bad ...

Basically seems to involve creating a goldcard for the phone and then running a RUU*exe file on the PC?

It's easy, I've done it.

You create the goldcard, which you insert into your phone. Connect your Desire via HTC Sync and run the ROM which installs like any other ROM. Done.
