SETI@home News Vol. 103

This is a problem as I am on the verge of paying for a PNY XLR8 GTX 295 (single pcb), a voice in my head says buy buy but my hearts saying ........
Reaver, need some advice on this.

All i can tell you is i have 2 Gainward's and 1 BFG that all work on both cores. I'm not sure but i think there all single PCB's. Is there any easy way to tell as the boxes don't seem to say unless i'm being dumb.
I don't want to be held responsible if anyone gets one that doesn't work when they get it.

Well i spoke too soon, having just come back to check on something, i noticed that my resevoir was rather hot, turns out i was a bit gung ho with the overclocking and i did not check the temperatures. i am running a q6600 under water and i had all 4 cores between 92 and 95c, eek. Anyway i took the plunge to upgrade to windows 7 as well as sorting out the temperatures and now there are no GPU tasks to crunch.

This is a good time for an update from loudbob on those hybrids - need to know what they are comparable with.

As requested:

Hybrid = GTX275 & GTS250

Two of these in my rig certainly outperform 3 x GTX260's - oc'd to 1496 shaders. I have ran both in this rig.

I would say that they are comparable to 3 x GTX285's (if not better)

So, same/better perfomance - but only two slots.

The 275's are currently oc'd to 1404 shaders (normally 1296).
The 250's are at factory settings as rig becomes unstable as I try to oc.

Also, I couldn't run my rig with three cards (didn't matter what card I used, the rig would not boot with 2 hybrids and any other card - but I think this was just down to the motherboard itself (some sort of power issue???).

I have had zero issues with using all GPU's with SETI - but it won't run Milkyway (just locks up - it runs all GPU clients at same speed, which I think is why it locks up).

Final note - they are very noisey.
However, with the use of EVGA Precision I can set the fan speed @ 60% and the top card max's out @ 80c, bottom card @ 65c under full load after 24hrs. At this fan speed noise is not an issue.

Overall - I am very happing with the performance of these cards.

Hi,

Could you explain how hybrids work? how is it that your two cards can be as good (roughly) as 3 better cards?

Smart new siggy pnutty!!
Well any thoughts of a cracking output for today are seemingly been dashed by 1 rig.:(
It starts up boots into windows fine, boinc starts ok but then takes at least 15 minutes to connect. Once it has connected and i change the tab to say update it takes another 15 minutes to react. Not sure what the heck it is, cant be tinternet the other 2 are fine, after half hour or so it comes up "password you have entered is incorrect" then i have to power down and start all over again.
Before i nuke it which i dont really want to do but i have tried everything, if it lets me abort all the tasks will that release them so others get the work? I hope so would be a shame otherwise.:(:(

I recognise your problem........

Sorry for the delay, real world has my attention.

The issue with your rig is that you have too many work units cached.

Because of the crunching power of your rig (short length of time it takes to complete one work unit) your rig will have cached thousands of work units (assuming your additional work buffer at or around 7 to 10 days cache).

As your rig will be trying to address all work units to make sure they are ok it looks like your rig (BOINC) is hanging.

That was the good news.

Bad news is - there is not a solution to your problem.
I tried to resolve this when I suffered the same issue. In the end I manually deleted the cache and reset BOINC.

Hi,

Could you explain how hybrids work? how is it that your two cards can be as good (roughly) as 3 better cards?

The cards are simalar to the GTX295's (Single PCB) - as that they have two GPU's on the one PCB (1 x GTX275 & 1 x GTS250).

The only thing they lack is an internal SLI Bridge - but as you wouldn't want to SLI a GTX275 and a GTS250 this does not matter.

The original idea of these cards was to use the GTX275 as primary display device with the GTS250 used for Physx.

As it turns out - these cards are quite useful for SETI.

Two Hybrids equal/better than three GTX285's. (and better power consumption???)

Thanks for that, i wish i knew that before i bought a gtx 280, having said that my current power supply would probably die if i had another gpu

three days of this is why no GPU powah atm

You could always use the rescheduler app to re-assign cpu units to your gpu

http://lunatics.kwsn.net/12-gpu-crunching/cpu-gpu-rebranding-perl-script.msg19454.html#msg19454

BOINC won't send you any work units if you already have enough to cover your additional work buffer (although it does count your CPU & GPU's seperate).

So if you already have GPU work units you can either sit tight and wait it out or do as edgedemon says and use Reschedule to re-assign units.

Oh yes, who's a Millionaire then ;), congratulations T

Thanks Mr Halz Sah...the last 24 hours have not been easy but touch wood all is flowing correctly again.

Thanks for that loudbob in the end i did just that and all seems ok now :D

Congrats to K3v on your surge in output nice one!

Hooo rahhhh :D

Conga rat ulations Mr Toxictbag, a most speedy first million, it must be a record around here. Think it took me 4 years!!

Aye, that first million didn't take TBag long at all  - I certainly remember my first million taking a lot longer (four years sounds about right for me too!).

Congrats sah, h'onwards and h'upwards :D

Thanks Kolala, getting setup right has been a pain but enjoyable hopefully all running smooth now....he says :D

Ta muchly TT....beeen messing around all day with setup yet again it is good to see it paying off....but even better when we stomp the Planetary peeps :D:D
Another great day for team output....Mr Halz Sah i've saved you a seat in the millionaires club...hop to it lad your beers getting cold ;):D

Thanks, interesting stuff, regards having a 3rd card installed with 2 hybrids, do you reckon it may have something
to do with internal sli restrictions (5 gpu's) as I am sure I read somewhere that nothing is certain to work beyond quad sli.
I think your settings may have sli disabled but may be its still a factor ?
Then again I may be totally wrong because I think Reaver has 3 GTX295's (6 gpu's) running together.
