Thankfully Nick Clegg is a man of the people instead with lots of real world experience under his belt!

I'd be taking the Tories' offer right now. Great to see Gordo falling on his sword. Take that, Crumpled Suit Man!

Can't argue with what Hague is saying there.

Agreed. Hague is a great orator and a decent guy IMO, I thought it was a shame he went for leadership of the party whilst Blair was at the height of his popularity. I think he'd make a great leader of the party / PM now.

AV without a referendum...great passing a new electoral system designed to prevent the loss of their seats.

It is the sort of thing you expect in a banana republic, but this is still Brown's labour party we are talking about.

I can't see them getting that through parliament though, it would decimate the vote of the smaller parties in the rainbow coalition...

I think that's probably enough for the LD's, I can see Clegg selling it to the party as a precursor to more comprehensive voting reform perhaps?

Once people get used to voting for more than one person (assuming AV is voted for) then it's a much smaller step to shift towards STV/MMP than from FPTP direct.

There's no benefit whatsoever to the LDs agreeing to AV without a referendum - if they didn't believe reform was popular I don't believe they'd be pushing for it so strongly.

That said, if Labour offered a referendum on full STV/MMP then that could change things again.

It is, however, pretty funny, that the Tories now support 'fiddling the system' (their own words) against them.

hmm quick question, can Labour offer AV without referendum? or would they have to get parliamentary approval - unlikely since they no longer have majority?

They'd try to push it through parliament with their cobbled together majority.

No doubt the SNP/PC would demand a very high price to push that through, at the English expense.

Wouldnt be the 1st time Labour have done something like this :(

What would another vote do for the national party's, i was just wondering if it is in their interests?

*Alternative Vote.

You can see the differences between them there, although the BBC removed the 2005 example for some reason, probably because it showed Labour would have gained a massive majority based on AV.
