With respect, we'll have to agree to disagree. You have a dim and unrealistic view of your fellow man :(

I don't know about that, of everyone I know (mostly professionals) hardly anyone seems to have much interest in politics. OcUK is the only place I know where it's discussed reasonably intelligently (some of the time).

Do you really think that the majority of people in this country have the ability to make educated, rational and well considered decisions on which way to vote on something as complex as this?

Really?

A country where Coronation Street and X Factor are the most popular television shows?

A country where The Sun and The Daily Mail are the best selling newspapers?
Voting systems really aren't that complicated.

Even the Aussies seem to manage AV so it can't be that hard.

But a lot of people are utterly indifferent, they just seem to not care at all.

It's sad really, when you see people risking getting blown up or shot in other countries when trying to get to a polling station and vote. People without democracy literally die trying to get it in other countries. Maybe because we've had it so long, people here take it for granted? :(

I believe enough of the country are intelligent enough to make a reasoned decision on the basis that the options are explained to them. I indicated to you very clearly that I feel that prior to any referendum, all information necessary to make a reasoned decision would be made available through the press.

Think back a few years to when David Beckham broke his metatarsal. Before that happened no-one had a clue, after a week in the press everyone is an expert.

I trust my point is made?

I wouldn't mind Clegg there either.

Be interesting to see how things like drugs policy shape up in such a scenario though, the Tories obviously being highly anti- and the LibDems being more in favour of an evidence-based strategy.

Thats half the problem. All the information necessary to make a biased decision in favour of whatever viewpoint that newspapers editorial has will be in the press.

Have you not seen how and what people vote on and all the duff and useless information from the press before elections.

Which differs from day to day life how exactly? You have to trust people to make the right decision.
