I would not want to be David Cameron right now-imagine taking on a job like that together with all that needs sorting out.

And quite possibly enemies in the ranks.

Neither did Tony Blair, but then that's not necessarily a good sign.
 
I can imagine a 'In The Thick of It' style scene where the news come into the room. All the Tories shuffle there papers, stand up and leave without saying a word and all the Lib-dems look confused as to what just happened
 
I believe technically when he resigns all authority of the PM is with the Queen. Yes, technically the Queen is now the PM.

That's the reason why she prefers to get the successor in as soon as possible as she hates to have the power.
