Do any of you work at the weekend (including bank holidays) for no pay increase?

I get every sunday and bank holiday off but work every saturday for standard money.
Bank holidays I either get paid for or I can take a day in lieu and not get paid - my choice.

However, should I choose to work a sunday or any of my days off which take me above my contracted hours, I don't get paid any extra hourly rate for it.

Mind you, we are virtually a 24-hour, 365d/yr operation and everyone who takes their fair share of earlies, lates and the odd night duty knows they won't get paid any extra for unsociable or weekend work, and it doesn't seem to unduly bother anyone either.

I'm certainly not concerned about it, I knew it was like that when I signed my contract.

Current job was originally just Saturday work but I now also work during the week but have a day off (normally Friday) in lieu of working Saturday.

We get a shift premium for the late shifts we do (2 weeks in a month) but nothing extra for the early shifts.

Bank holidays I can work but don't get any extra pay just a day off in lieu.

I do :(. I work in a small cafe in a local visitor attraction (Part time, studying for a degree too)

When the cafe used to be managed by a larger firm with several catering businesses we used to get a flat rate for weekends and time and a half on bank holidays, we also got about 2 weeks paid holiday.
Since then it's bin independently leased to a smaller company run by a husband and wife, the pay is all the same weekend, bank holiday, night and outside catering pay is all at a flat rate. I don't really do too bad though, she usually gives me a bit extra if we've had a busy spell and I've worked hard.

Have you had someone look at your cv. Do you tailor it to where you work. Removing qualifications and experience for bottom rung jobs.
when you say signed up with agencies, have you gone in person, dressed up smart.
Have you been flexible and enthusiastic about getting any job. Got warehouse, slaughter house and data entry jobs within 72hours, in the past.

You're lucky. I went into all the agencies in my town (around 5 of them), 2 asked if I had any office experience, no, and wouldn't even take my CV (Reed and another big name) and another told me to email it in (after going in in person), never heard from them but they do mainly school and nursing type jobs, the other two I had to email in and haven't heard anything since...

In fact the only agenies I have had any help from are the industry specific ones that are based online.

Work all Bank Holidays (except Good Friday and Christmas Day) and receive days off in lieu.

Work for RBS.

I work any 5 from 7 here. I'd lose a fair bit of money every month if I changed to a Mon-Fri job but I do keep an eye out from time to time.

One thing I will say is that "double time and a day off" for bank holidays is a bit of a con really. It sounds good but it isn't. If it's a bank holiday week and you just take the monday off, you get 5 days pay for 4 days work because you get a paid day off. If you opted to work the monday but take the friday off (makes no difference when you take your 'free' day off) you get 6 days pay for 4 days work so you gain 1 days pay and nothing else. No extra days off. You are gaining 1 days pay for working the bank holiday. Nothing more, apart from moving a day off.

But banks aren't open on bank holidays? :p

I just turned down going on a cruise, er, I mean shoot around the Med for 4 days next weekend. I must be mad. :(

They are in other parts of the world....

Which unfortunately means I work bank holidays too... No extra pay but I do get a lieu day - which I usually take on the Tuesday.

Tbh.. it works out OK - a couple of people from my desk have to cover bank holidays, I can basically stroll in hung over on the monday morning in jeans and a T-Shirt, do some casual tasks etc... but really not much until the afternoon. By the time people in the New York start work I actually have to do some proper work for a few hours - then I go to the pub, carry on drinking and don't have to be back in the office until Wednesday...

In a way I do like working bank holidays - only really have to do a few hours of proper work and its quite relaxed as hardly anyone is in the office plus I get the Tuesday off so in effect just get a slightly longer weekend before I'm back in the office, surrounded by co-workers and working properly...

Hey people,

Just a question if anyone works at weekends for no additional pay increase but all you get in return is days in lieu?

Have been wondering what anyone else would do and if they actually do work at these times?

Cheers

Mikoyan

edit: I do weekday work 9-5:30 mon-fri so weekends should be weekends imo! :/

I only get days in lieu for working bank holidays. I don't get any increase in pay rate per hour for working weekends or bank holidays.

I work shifts, including weekends and nights and all sorts of hours. I get paid the same rate as colleagues of mine who work a standard mon-fri 9-5. So I get paid for every hour I work but I don't receive an increased rate for unsociable hours.

I get time and a half if I work on a bank holiday and that's it. All bank holidays are now bundled in with contractual paid holiday leave rather than seperately. I expect that's the first step towards stopping the time and a half payment, as bank holidays are now no different to any other day.

On the other hand, I get 33 days of paid holiday a year (8 bank holidays and 25 days as per my contract). Six and a half weeks. That's rather generous, so I'm not going to complain about not being paid extra for working at weekends. Not that I would anyway, because why would I care? There's nothing special about Saturday and Sunday.

I work every saturday for same pay as a normal day, but I get wed off instead. Sundays are time and a half but I never work them.

Have to work bank holidays but they are double time + day in lieu.

As to agencies - you aren't gonna hear back from them unless they are desperate, so do call them up a couple of times a week. But most agencies are useless. Inevitably mess you around. I've ever only found one agency that was any good and that was a local one.
