VAT is going up to 20% say government

i'd be happy to pay 20% vat. Aslong as the country was in a better state.

Seems people want a feeding of the 5000 situation to go on in the world.

Improvements come from spending money, You want improvements, Spend the money. We all say we want this that and the other improving. well it costs money believe it or not.

Poll Tax - though everyone pays the same it is a regressive tax (like VAT), so the poorer you are the more the tax you'll pay (in proportion to your earnings)

Poll tax is for local services only though, so it has nothing to do with earnings ... just like council tax has nothing to do with earnings.
Poll tax charged it per person, as everyone is an equal drain, council tax charges it based on property

I think the idea behind council tax is higher house value = bigger house = more people living there = charge them more for rubbish collection.

Poll tax wouldn't be fair on say 4 young adults sharing one house paying 2 times more than a family of 6 next door.

Of course it gets complicated when you factor in police expenditure where I believe most of our council tax gets sent.

Err what?

Poll tax was PER PERSON. Naturally kids are free, as they should be.

People said dropping VAT didn't make a difference but rising it will some how help the country, they money will just be miss spent again.

Coalition Government Con/Lib had agreed to rise VAT from 17.5% to 20.0% by end of 2011 when the emergency budget to be announced within 50 days say the latest BBC news.

Once again, David Cameron is lied to the British Peoples when he told Labour Party that he will not rise any VAT under conservative government.

Exactly! It seems many people want the government to get us out of this debt crisis, fix all the other problems and demand lower taxes at the same time. Oh and all of this must be done ASAP or else!

We have hard times ahead, everyone should just adapt to this situation, stop whining and let the new government get on with it for a while.

Tories: We're going to have to take tough measures to help the economy
Dumb public: Sure anything is better than Labour.... /votes conservative.
Tories: ok we're increasing VAT
Dumb public: omg bring back labour!

i) You make an untrue statement to smear a political party.
ii) As alleged support for your statement, you post a link to an article which proves your statement to be false.

So you're dishonest, foolish to a quite ridiculous extreme and semiliterate.

If you are a Labour supporter, you would help them more by staying silent.

There was nothing wrong with the idea behind the community charge to use it's proper name. There's four adults living in the two bed apartment above me, and they're only paying 25% more for local services after my discount. Fair? I think not. I think it's reasonable to assume they consume somewhat more than 25% greater amounts of local services from the council.

I think you will find it is a regressive tax.

A regressive tax is a tax that takes a smaller proportion of a income as income rises. As your earnings rise you still pay the same amount of tax so as a proportion of your income it is smaller, hence regressive.

I noticed that small shops/restaurants just took the drop as an increase in revenues! i only noticed the change in my mobile phone bill

+1 We dont want a Greece esq problem on our doorstep! (their VAT is due to increase from 21% to 23%)

I would have been surprised if it didn't rise to 20%. Ever since it was dropped to 15% I expected to rise even higher. It is by far the easiest way for the government to raise ~£12.5b which goes a long way to cutting the deficit. I also wholly expect a fair amount of public debt to be eradicated when the Bank shares are flogged. I think it is about £170b that was invested, so I hope we get about £200b back. Who knows.

This was always on the cards wasn't it? Regardless of who is in charge.

No doubt we'll have a million poorly typed threads about the various tax rises we have, all blaming the current government. As if Labour wouldn't have had to make cuts and raise taxes...

Were are we going to get the other 900 billion from?

One important thing to remember is that -- like credit card companies -- the people we owe the debt to have no interest in us paying it off. The aim, from the market's point of view, is stability, so we'll be in a position to keep paying interest on the massive loans forever.

I thought I was the only one that knew the scale of the problem. The OP rant is going to pale into insignificance when the rest of the cuts are put in. The interest on UK debt is currently over £60b, just like your mortgage they need to pay off interest and capital, so expect that to rise.

They need close to 10 times the VAT income, I'd love to see the socialist ranting at the end of the year :p

It was a simple *FAIR* policy unlike council tax which is complicated and unfair. Why should a family of 6 in a small house pay less than an elderly retired couple in a big house when they will use more services ?

And why should someone on £10k a year pay 10% of their salary on this tax, whilst someone on £1m a year pays 0.1% on the same tax? The trouble with the word "fair" is that it usually means "I would pay less".
