Hi guys and gals. Im new to oc forums and this is my first post.
I have been a oc customer for a while now on two seperate accounts over a few years and just never bothered joining the forums but now i have so hi!. I normally just read posts so i guess thats why i never joined... i know lazy.

This is my close future setup but this post is for also any hardware details or problems you have found out about any of it that i would like to know of.
I have already got:

asus rampage iii extreme motherboard
a sapphire hd5970
23 inch hd monitor
A haf 932 cooler master full tower case
i7 980x extreme cpu
Koolance exos2.5 external water cooling system with 360 cpu block and vidar597 cooling block for hd5970(which i had to order from the states which was NOT CHEAP)

And stuff im going to get:
Corsair Dominator GT PC3-16000(2000) CMG6GX3M3A2000C8 - 6GB (3x2GB) maybe make it 12gb... lol
The new veloci raptor 450 gb sata hard drive(when western digital move there butts and bring em out)

I already have a average gaming pc atm but its time for a upgrade as you can see. Im not in rush at all so im going to wait about 1 more month for the new veloci raptor to come out. Im also not bothering with crossfire for money resons.
Anyway i have two questions for you guys and gals. Do you think this is a good setup? And 2 - Does anyone know when the new velociraptors are getting released? I have searched for news everywhere but cant get a good estimate on a date. I have pre order'd mine through over clockers already but i found out that it was oem after i order'd(im not really a oem type) and i normally prefer retail gear even for the little extra cash. So what are your thoughts? Have you had any hardware problems with any of this gear?

Thanks

I was told that ssd's are not worth getting at the moment and a veloci raptor is better in the long run and more reliable. If not a veloci raptor what other hard disk could you recommend for gaming? I like the idea of ssd but i mean i heard they are still not as good as other hard disks due to not lasting in the long run from what i have heard. Plus im only gaming and browsing on the machine, nothing else. Are veloci raptors really that loud?

You know i think im just gonna get 2 new 450 gb veloci raptors when they come out and set them up in raid 0. Cant loose doing this really and performance will be bang on the money.

Welcome. :D

What if you drop he 980x raptor and the 5970 and get 2 5870 with full cover waterblocks i7 920 @ £170 and c300 120gb for an ssd? and also a 1tb wd from music ect...? but if youve already orderd the gpu block it doesnt matter its still a top noch bulid.

I already got everything apart from the memory and the hard drives... I think im just going to go for two 450gb velociraptors. a lot Cheaper then a ssd of the same size, about £450 max.

SSD > Raptors

Just get an 80 or 160GB SSD for OS and vital programs/games

And as recommended a Samsung F3 1TB or WD Caviar Black 1TB for storage.

Why would you get 2 raptors instead of an ssd? Raptors are hot and noisy and could die on you, SSD reliability and durability is king imo.

You've bought a top system and like most PCs the only part letting it down is the HDD, get an SSD!!

Totally agree.

I have no idea how you can buy a 980x and say an SSD is too much money. :O

SSD + Large storage will be better than a velociraptor. You would be able to fit a few games on the SSD while being faster and quieter.

Edit: I've also read that if a SSD dies you can still access the data you just can't write to it. Even then, it will be a long time before that happens.

ok ok lol SO i have been reading for the last two hours on ssd's and am straying away from the raptors towards the ssd Intel X25-M Mainstream 160Gb. Is the best ssd for gaming at my budget of £400? Or would you suggest some other ssd for gaming? I dont use any other media or anything else just games on my new system so 160gb is fine as i normally have about 3 games installed at once. So how bout it? Know a better ssd for gaming then the one i have picked? Forgive me im still semi-newb lol

I've got the 80GB version of that drive. Not sure about 1 drive being better for gaming or not tbh.

I don't think the benefits of SSD really come into gaming apart from launching games tbh. From my personal experience, it's just the responsiveness of your OS. It feels like you've done a clean install the day before EVERY day with SSD.

I've got a pretty darn good system myself but the jump to SSD was noticeable.

Forget the raptors. The intels were the best drives when I bought mine couple of months back due to the random read/write which I think is the most important.

Personally if I had the money, I would buy x2 of the 80GB version of set it up in Raid 0

Something I may do in the near future.

RE: Gaming, honestly the two most important things for me are gfx card and monitor (presuming ur CPU isn't bottlenecking ur gfx - which urs ofc won't be)

So 2 of those 80GB comes in at about £330 and a 1TB samsung is less than £60. So for less than £400, you'll be right sorted. You might not notice such a difference if you install SSD from day 1 but think in about 2 months time, ur OS will still be just as snappy then, as it is now - for me, that's the benefit of SSD - consistency.

P.S. On my 80GB I have W7 64bit installed, CODMW2, L4D1 and L4D2 and some smaller games like TFC and MS Office and other programs and still have around 25GB space free.

This... :)

i was looking into raid0 for these two ssd's but i was told that there isnt much difference in read speeds when you combine the two as they are fast enough on there own. But they are still the nearly the same price if you bought just one 160gb verson from intel so i guess it is worth it... thanks for info might buy two now lol

Sounds like an amazing machine your putting together there! You wont be dissapointed with the HAF 932 as its an amazing case with loads of room, just not the prettiest!

I personally see you throwing money away with the 980x and that choice of RAM. I would have gotten a 930, x2 GTX480's and G Skill trident RAM for a lot cheaper and would have been better for gaming but oh well you have already bought the overpriced processor.

I like your choice of motherboard and a big thumbs up for water cooling for a s1336 processor.

The SSD thing yeah there not the best for gaming no fps increase just map loading times decrease.

I would personally go for an Intel X-25M 80gb for OS and programmes and x2 Samsung F3 spinpoint's 1tb in RAID 0 for games and media.

Since when are velociraptors hot & loud

Mine's running at a scorching 32c and it's very quite.

I bought a crucial M225 60gb ssd and sold it within 2 weeks, yes windows loaded quicker and apps opened a bit quicker but for the money i thought it was a total waste.
When ssd's become cheaper & have a larger capacity so i can put all my games on them then they will become a better buy for myself.
