My new pet

You can have one of my Ghost Mantis if you like (when they arrive, should be Tuesday). I just bought a couple but I'm being sent some extra for free.

<Will look like this fully grown.

He looks ready for a bust up in the ring!
Proper mean looking :D

Arghh you got a ghost too :( still waiting on mine...

I couldn't resist.

Surprising how small it actually is, I found the smallest fly in the garden and fed him that, he attacked it as soon as I put it in :D

The 2 congos have been slightly less interested in food and have spent a few hours wandering around with a locust each.

1 has eaten his now, but the other doesn't seem too bothered yet.

Did the ghost come with food?
The miomantis x4 that i got today came with micro crickets in the container - dunno if they ate some during postage, but they haven't eaten since i got them this morning :/

Ive read they generally wont eat for a couple of days due to the travelling, its stressful for the little guys being tossed around in a little box lol. Just stick some in till they want it.

I couldn't see any remains of food in the containers, but it took less than a day from being posted to me opening them and they were fed before they left so probably the larger ones are not as hungry.

The guy I got them from said the congo's will probably only eat 1 locust every 3 days or so at the moment so not to worry if they don't eat straight away.

So I wouldn't worry about it, maybe they will eat during the night.

I've got it now Raikiri, when I opened the little tub it was in, it actually looked at me and was like "wtf" :D

Such an awesome little guy :p Thanks again!

Kitchen is nearly done now so i should be able to start filling some of these pots i have :D

My congo is on grade 4 locust now, gave her one yesterday and it started kicking about a bit, so she pinned its leg back and munched it off :p

Cant wait to get my orchid and ghost sorted :)

Only 3 more days till i get my Ghost, i hope he/she likes the home ive put together for it..any idea how to tell the sex of them?

From the care sheet -

Sexual Diamorphism: can be easily sexed from 3rd instar onwards!
Females: 6 abdominal segments. "Head Crown" is broad with one kink
Males: 7 abdominal segments. "Head Crown" is thin with two kinks.
Adult Females: Larger and bulkier than males, wing tips before tip of abdomen.
Adult Males: Slender, wing tips extend just past tip of abdomen. Longer antenne.

Oh, Raikiri, as I see you are online, what instar is the one you sent me?

Hey, that should be 3rd. Did you get it ok?

Ah, you did! Awesome, I rarely trust RM with inanimate objects so I was a little unsure.

Awsome, i missed that part, just re-checked its on my sheet too lol 'shudda gone to specsavers' springs to mind, well mine should be around 1st-2nd instar so a while to find out what it is...gonna have to think of a uni-sex name.

Yes, it's doing fine, it had devoured all the food you put in with it, and has had some more this evening

It's a fantastic little thing though, I'd encourage more people to think about getting one (as you have done) as they are very easy to look after and information isn't hard to come by on the internet :p

I'd get one, but I don't fancy having to catch and handle flies and other bugs to feed to it :/

Well, you just buy some flies (Fruit flies probably) for a couple of pounds, that would probably last you a few weeks, and there are containers(and methods) of transferring them into the Mantids housing, so its pretty simple really.

Or take a simple way out and buy some small mealworms while its young and then buy the large ones when its bigger, its exactly what im doing, as i used to fish so im used to maggots and the like so dont mind picking them up, maybe when its bigger ill try some locusts or something (not keen on them but ill 'man up')
