As stated in my edit above (which you might not have seen) my flat is only three years old, so this is not true.
They're revaluing soon anyway, it'll just get worse.

Please look at my list (from wiki) above. How on Earth can the fact someone have a 'nicer place' have any baring on their local services?
Selling those same british companies that were operating at a loss, going on strike at the drop of a hat, and holding the general population as hostages everytime they wanted something different? Not picking on you personally here but this is something I have picked up on as of late, the majority blame labour for the misfortune that this country has had in the last several years. Yet what they dont remember is what went on before this, conservative goverment selling off many many British companies to foreign countries, thus causing issues which labour had to cope with. I do agree that Labour could have done a better job, but take into consideration what the Greeks are going through, if it weren't for Gordon Brown we would be worse off then them.
I can just see a facturite regime coming back and destroying this country further, if however it doesn't then maybe, just maybe, we will benefit from this coalition goverment.
my two cents, even if in comparison to some I am a newbie to politics.
Because you live there.fire, schools, leisure centres, park and ride schemes, parks and open spaces, street cleaning, subsidising of public transport, tourism, museums, environmental health and food safety in pubs, meals on wheels, facilities for young people, adapting homes for disabled people, play centres for children, cctv installation, sports facilities, issuing taxi licences.
i don't use any of the above (not currently) in my locale why should i pay the same as someone who does?
Why should I pay more for council tax just because I live in a nice area?
How can you say that is fair?
Do you know what? The last page or so in this thread would be very fitting in the "What is Broken about Britain" Thread from last week. People complaining that they are being hard done by just because their property is worth more, or that the area they live in has nice parks etc. "But I don't use them!!111"
Suck it up. You have a high value/desired property. You will pay more council tax because of it.

Oh, right, yeah, selling those companies really killed our nation.
Might not be fair, but its a very efficient form of taxation.
The Poll Tax for example would be the most efficient form of taxation.
Inheritance tax is another efficient form of taxation. In fact you could argue its more than that, since it forces people to supply more labour.
as it stands my family of 5 (4 adults, 1 child) produce less waste than the family of 5 (2 adults, 3 children) next door, why is it fair to charge us more for less of a service?
it's quite possible for more people to produce less waste than fewer people and yet under poll tax we would all be charged the same. rubbish.

Would you say it is a fair way of taxing people who rent property?
You get service from the council. There is no "VIP Service" just because your property is more valuable, and thus your contribution to council tax is higher.
It is fairer simply because you own a more valuable property. I.e. you can AFFORD a more valuable property.

Huh ??, if there is no VIP service then everyone should have to pay the same for that same service. In fact ironically the better of areas get a worse service as the lions share of the money is channelled to areas of greater need (and probably rightly so).
It is not fair to penalise people with more valuable properties. The disparity in income arguement is tackled via income tax.
but the lorry that collects the waste still have to drive to your house, and a person has to empty your waste into the lorry, it costs the same weather your waste weights 5kg or 10kg...
the different in cost between the miniscule ammout of extra fuel (to carry the extra 5kg), and the extra space it usd in the landfill hardly warrants a discount...
And its fair to tax people who earn more harder?
Income taxation has a lot of undesired effects, while council taxes have very few.
I know which one I'd pick.
And its fair to tax people who earn more harder
Also, wealthier places tend to have much better council services. I wonder why thats the case.
Why not petition your local council to spend less. Then the rates can fall.
