VAT is going up to 20% say government

Im not trying to be funny but what does

mean ??

Why is taxing people who live in more expensive houses any less fair than taxing people who earn more?

As for undesired effects. Income taxes causes people to work less = bad. Tax people based on the value of the house and they work just the same if not more.

Not true at all, council taxes gets channelled into areas of greater need within the council area and rightly so.

How much of the budget does the council spend on regeneration though? (That's the only kind of spending they can channel I would guess).

edit:

I see why you were confused. It was a mistake when I edited the sentence. Not "more harder". Supposed to be "more".

I don't have a high value property though. It's worth about £100000, which is probably below the national average by some distance. My parent's house is worth about £150000, but for some reason I am on the same tax band. The whole system is broken.

well, one or both parties are not being wholly truthful in this instance as you should be in band E and your parents in band F. again, it's based on the value (or i'd guess an estimated value of a similar property for those built post 1991) placed on it on the 1st april 1991

it costs the same weather your waste weights 5kg or 10kg...

the different in cost between the miniscule ammout of extra fuel (to carry the extra 5kg), and the extra space it usd in the landfill hardly warrants a discount...
Of course it costs more. It's not just one house, if you take the accumulative quantity it's going to be significantly more.

Another case of mis-managed finances and 'stealth taxing' unfortunately. :)

Council tax has almost trebled in some areas under labour in 13 years.

Can anyone say that council services are three times better?

How about all that flood damaged caused by councils not clearing out rivers and dykes like they used too?
Top management there.

How much control does central government have over council tax rates?

Also remember that services do cost more as time passes. Just need to look at things like rent prices to see how things rise. How have wages risen over the last 13 years? Probably not trebled but it does make the figure less astounding. I'm sure some things have risen disproportionately, which could perhaps be cut. I seem to remember reading some salaries of council workers being quite high for some positions.

No idea, maybe I'm just venting after a bad day at work so far and being tired.

You could talk about how many CCTV systems and hence CCTV operators you actually need.

I think this also varies a lot from council to council. A cost-benefit analysis could be done, if not done already.

Quite. I'm quite certain, but at the same time not completely certain, that council tax doesn't entirely go to the council that the property is in, rather it is collected in a big pool at the Treasury and allocated. Perhaps this should change. Though I'm not sure if that would be "fair" due to some areas having a lot more council housing than others?

Wouldn't that be the responsibility of one of the river authorities

Much more relevant would be councils (not always Labour) allowing people to pave over their front garden.

On a similar note, the number of people who have been given permission to convert their front garden into a driveway, and also to get the trees removed so they could fit these driveways in. My Mum's road used to be a very nice avenue with trees outside alternating houses. It was quite picturesque in fact.

Now it's a series of mish-mash driveways and a massive lack of trees :(
