hey everyone,
sorry if this has been asked a million times before, but heck im going for it.

in 2 weeks, I will finally finish university, I have a job lined up and am thinking about getting back into WoW

I played WoW when it first came out, since then there are expansions and god knows what else. What I want to know, is when do the new realms come online, So I can join one with a character and not worry about running around on my own for the rest of the game, also, is there any point as I only have the standard version of the game, no expansions.

I do know one thing, when I do this, im going to be sat letting the 'standard' install from over 3 years ago, update to the latest version!

thanks in advance.

At the moment things will be quiet at low levels in my opinion. When the expansion comes out things will be a lot busier as people will be starting new characters. It's up to you, if you don't mind questing mostly solo (but still being able to get into dungeons thanks to the new dungeon finder) then feel free to start now. If you'd prefer to quest with other people it might be better to start when the expansion comes out. Either way I wouldn't say you were too 'late'.

people will always be rerolling or new players liek yourself will be playing so anytime is good to restart id say. thing is, the game totally different now. you will mostly level inside instances thanks to the dungeon finder tool you can queue up in. quests are only a sideline, unless youre antisocial ;)
i cant remember the last time a new server got started though, do they still do that?

How does dungeon finder work? That sounds quite tempting as I like just doing dungeons but always got uber ****ed off that I could never find a group. So if im a level20 and want to join a group to wailing caverns... what happens? I click the new looking for group button and im straight into a dungeon? :s

With the new LFG (looking for group) system i find it a bit easier to level my character as i can quest while in que for dungeon and dungeon also gives lots of xp.
With no expansion your limited to level 60.
With BC (Burning Crusade) expansion you can level up to 70.
With WOTLK (Wrath of the Lich King ) you can now level up to 80.

more or less yes, you choose what you want to do. dps/tank/heal and queue up. tanks and healers can find groups easier obviously.

Anything <70 is just going to be people power-levelling though. And with the increased levelling rate meaning you'll have far more quests than you need to 'ding' I wouldn't expect too much "LFG" being shouted in the lower orders.

Shame, really, as 1-60 is by far the most fun part of the whole game. Outland is freaking terrible.

I quite like it, some areas, Hellfire, Nagrand a few other spots are some of my fav areas of the game.

Having said that, I was looking through my screenshots folder, when my first character was level 20 I was flying over Searing Gorge and marveling at how it looked and that all the enemies were ?? to me....

I miss that feeling. Cata shall allow us to relive it, I'm going to level a new character when it comes out.

Don't forget, the new Cataclysm expansion is going to completely change the original game, brining the orginal 2 continents and quests in line with what's on offer in WOTLK etc. It will be a very good reason for a lot of people to re-subscribe and see what it's like :)

i thought the older regions of the original continents were going to be phased, so the low levels were in the original barrens etc but there would also be a higher level 85 'other' region too? ive not kept up with how cataclysm is coming since i quit so maybe its changed?

99% sure that the changes to old regions affect everyone, regardless of whether they have the expansion pack or are low level.

Its a piece of cake. Just hit I and it brings up the dungeon finder:

The satchel of helpful goods contains a piece of blue gear designed for your level. Nothing amazing, not quite as good as the blue's that will be dropping from the end of instance bosses, but you get once per dungeon, and some of my char's are stull using their helpful goods gear. Sometimes you do get them with dire stats though. And at the top levels, you get emblems instead of the bag.

Anyway, if you select a random dungeon, you just pick along the top if you will be the tank, healer or dps, though only classes that can fit into the slots can select them. For instance, mages can only dps, priests can heal or dps, and so on.

Alternatively, if you want to do one dungeon specifically:

Select the one you want from the list. You don't get the exp/gold/item bonus from the end, but hey, its worth it.

Then you hit 'find group' and wait. It sits in an icon next to the minimap silently, allowing you to go off and do quests, kill things, or whatever you like.

That will pop up, just click 'Enter dungeon' and it will wait for all 5 members of the group to click it, once all 5 have, it teleports you into the beginning of the dungeon, no traveling needed. And when you've finished, it ports you back exactly where you were. You can even do it mid-flight point, and it will stick you back on the flight where you were.

Waiting times will vary a little depending on server, but generally DPS seems to be around a 10 minute wait, depending purely on how many people there are trying. Tanks and healers get in pretty much instantly, there's always groups that need them :D

All in all its a great system, and a godsend. Selecting specific dungeons is useful for questing or for going after a certain boss drop, alternatively go random for the handy gear drop.

Also, when doing a random dungeon you get a buff which gives you +5% health, damage and healing.

I can see the release of Cata forcing me to steal my little brothers expired account and starting up again. Think a few people are feeling the same, so if your up for re-rolling in Cata then I'm happy to start a small type social guild

Yup me and a friend are both doing the same starting fresh, we have an older shared account with about 140k gold on it hah, should get us started :p

Yea man, good time to start. You missed out on some good years but there is still a lot of mileage left in that game. Us nagging old ******** that keep slagging the game off, is just missing it how it once was. Like anything in life, stuff changes. WoW did. I personally don't think it changed for the better, but it sure is hard arguing with 12 million odd players. Go for it!

Awesome, that looks good. I might level up a priest now, go shadow all the way to 80 and then holy in dungeons? Interesting. Think im going to reinstall now. Got to get my account unlocked though haha.

So if im level20 can I do all dungeons even end game ones? Or just ones around my level? How do skills work? Do you automatically get given holy tree when using dungeon finder even if they dungeon is meant to be 20+ levels for you?

I really dont think theres been a better time to get into WoW, the looking for dungeon system is great. Some of my guild mates have barely left capital cities while they level, only using the LFD system to hit instance after instance.

Try not to pay too much attention to those who constantly bemoan the death of the game because Blizzard decided it might be nice for more than 1% of players to see the inside of endgame dungeons ;).
