Lesson learned: Don't buy cheap Chinese tat from Tesco

Tescos is all right in my book.. i got there version of the HP cartridges today.. £26 for colour and black as opposed to HP's £50!! Huuuraaah for Tescos. Oh and they work sweeeeet.

oh come on now, you don't need to spend £280 on a vacuum cleaner, we spent £50 and ours is very good!

tbh yeh £280 is a lot, however the ball technology actually works, in the adverts they show how it maneuvers, well it actually does do that making it so much quicker hoovering, and it can be easily taken apart making cleaning easy :)

If I had £280 to spend on one, I wouldn't have bought the cheapy Tesco one to start with...:p

You don't need your receipt. The item will no doubt have Tesco written on it somewhere. Take it's faulty plastic ass back and demand a refund.

It does, but the warranty period isn't infinite ;)

Statutory rights.

Surely the warranty is longer than 6 months anyway?

It is, but I need to prove I bought it 6 months ago and not 3 years or something.. proof of purchase is pretty much the first item in any warranty arrangement.

chances are that Miele, Dyson any other brand you name it is probably built in China too. You were unlucky.

Maybe, but is a £35 hoover built with the same internals as a £200 one?

Doubt it. If Tesco is anything like where I work (another major retailer), they'll replace/refund anything that's their own brand without proof of purchase... since it's unlikely you'd buy a Tesco branded vacuum cleaner from someone other than them.

this isn't a warranty arrangement, this is a "potentially fatal product failure" replacement.

take it in and they'll have you a new one on the spot.

Nah, don't need another fire hazard :p

Either way, I'll check to see if I can get a refund tomorrow.

They have the issue of how much you paid for it and therefore how much to refund though.

I bought a Dyson DC04 10 years ago now and its used everyday yet still works just like it did on the first day.

Its had one new hose and thats it.

Probably the best "expensive" purchase i have ever made.

And how do you know how it was being used ? I could make any Vacuum catch fire if I covered it with towels.....maybe I should do that just before the warranty is up.

There are many reasons why it would have caught fire.

It may have been dust leaking into the motor, water/humidity shorting the circuits, over heating due to improper ventilation or high room temperatures or any other sort of debris inside the mechanical parts or simply cheap electronics.

Are you sure your mains is OK ? I've seen loads of people have problems with appliances due to faulty mains/spikes/frequency/wiring problems. Smoking and fire can happen to even the most expensive Vacs - or the cheapest. In fact it can happen to any electrical appliance......I remember taking apart a brand new Flymo lawnmower that had been used twice, that had burned out and caught fire due to dry grass catching in the motor.

And as for Dyson....avoid like a rabid hooker. Not cheap, and not reliable.

Get a proper expert to check it out before going for any sort of refund.
