This is what happens when science hits the mainstream media, tiny things get blown out of proportion by people who pretend they know what they are talking about (not you op, the original article). It's happened with global warming and just look what a mess that has turned into...

There is (quite a strong) school of thought that if Katla does erupt it is unlikely to be any worse than the current eruptions. In fact, as Civ101 says the current eruption could carry on for years (from past data) but Katla would probably be over quite quickly.

Say what? How do you propose people re-evaluate, it's not like I can request a booking on a day when the ash won't be blowing in our direction? the only way I can see of implementing your proposal is to simply not book anything as then you can't be cught out.

What I can see is far more bookings with tour operators instead of booking your own flights and hotel. Tour operators will sort out your holiday for you and if they can't get you there will refund the hotel too, booking seperately you'll find it a lot harder.

Exactly - don't book, don't rely on being able to fly around as easily and reliably as you could last year. For example don't plan a stag to in Ibiza, plan it somewhere you can get to without flying.
