My new pet

Awsome my little Ghost arrived around an hour ago, all its FF are dead though :(, so im off to hunt for some flies in the garden that it can eat, till my FF culture arrives sometime this week....General question, water? how and what do i give them water in - Also branches/twigs, are any out of the garden ok and do i need to do anything to it first.

Spray the enclosure once every day or two (depending on age) with a spray gun, on the "mist" setting :p

I'm not sure exactly, he's getting them end of next week. The chap said I'd get a good deal if I bought several (as they are fairly communal like Ghosts).

Looks like i'll need a heat lamp and some other stuff for it, which he said he'd provide cheaply aswell! :p

I'll most likely get them provided they aren't an absolute fortune/ripoff!

Many people suggest either sticking the twigs in boiling water or into the oven to kill off nasties. They get fluids from their prey too, but as Robbo says really.

That is suggested, but 99% of people don't bother.

They are a formidable insect and are supposed to live in the wild of rainforests and god knows what and there are far nastier things afoot in the bark there :eek: :p
 
Cheers guys, got myself a half pint pot (plastic) with some net curtain ontop lol, bit of kitchen towel in the bottom and a twig that reaches the net just about, my Ghost is a L2 just about (born 2 may), still trying to find it some food... Also hes far too small my camera wont focus on him at all :(

If you can't find anything at all, like small flies etc.

Find an Ant (you can feed them ants, although dont feed it loads), squash it a bit, so its half crippled, then put it in with it.

As its small, and ants are quite strong, it might wriggle free, thus why you should squash it a bit :p

Oh, and your enclosure sounds fine, so dont worry about that!

I bet less than 5% survive from hatching in the wild!
The only worry i guess is mites or something similar infecting your mantis.

greenfly is an option too, the are much easier to catch than small fly's you can usually just pick them up
 
You may get to a point where whenever you see something, you wonder on it's suitablilty for your mantis -
Can my mantis eat that?
If i stuck some mesh on that, would it be a good size when when the mantis is adult?
Could i stick that in the enclosure for it to climb on? Looks better than a twig. (i use twigs btw :p)

So very very true...went shopping Saturday for some artificial plants for my new gecko setup and ended up with about another 40 plastic tubs ><

Annnnd therhe was a hugge spider at work today that i was actually going to go catch and feed to my adult congo green but someone threw it outsude :(
 
I'm definitely getting to the stage where everything I see is potential mantis food, and therefore the pro's and con's get weighed up depending how rare it is and how far from home I am :D

Also, a couple more of Harold today, slowly getting the hang of taking fairly good photos of him, could do with him shedding and then I think the camera will be able to focus properly on his tiny face!

Wish my camera on my phone could even focus on my Ghost, hes like a Ghost to the camera :P still havent found anything, wheres all the damn flies today, even made a fly trap thanks to the ukmantis forum but no joy.
