My new pet

On the mantis forum there is a guy who has made a moth catcher...cost him about £20 and has had stupid amounts of food from it :)

Must be something around that you can catch, start running round outside with a net in all the bushes! :D

I saw that, very tempted to make one, it looks extremely effective!

Yea and all my neighbours will be thinking "hes finally lost, poor sod" lol...i havent given up, ive resorted to leaving the bathroom light on and window open to invite moths and whatever into there, so fingers crossed.

Use a dark UV light so it isnt stupidly bright, but the moths still fancy a bit of it :p

Just get a fruit fly culture for like £2, you need to have at leasat some food stored up so your little fella doesnt go hungry, especially if hes only like L2/3 he needs his grub :D

You're quite right G18241, mine is a little eating machine

See if there is a reptile shop near you Knight, there must be, pretty much all exotic pet shops will stock Fruit Fly cultures, and probably some more normal pet shops too :p

Not around here they dont, tryed my only 2 shops that i know of in Donny yesterday, all they have got is size 3 crickets, almost 2 times bigger than my mantis :( - anyways the bathroom light trick worked, a few small moths and some small flies. Put one moth in, 2 secs later i couldnt see it as the mantis had swiped it as soon as it was in..quick little bugger it is.

my locusts are outgrowing my mantids :( most of them have moulted since I got them and are quite a bit bigger than they were.

May have to keep these and have a crack at breeding them when they are adult, and buy size 1's next time.

Gives me an excuse to pick the dandelions from the garden at least.

Just wanted to share that - they mated!

My d. melanogaster that is. Saw a male getting it on with a female (i hope). I went in for a closer look, and they might have caught me spying on them because the male soon stopped, cleaned his penis with it's legs, then retracted it somewhere.

I find the fruit flies amusing to watch at times. Like when i throw one into one of my mantis cups, and the fly immediately stops on the kitchen towel, extends it's mouth/sucker and drains water from it.
I'd think they're disgusting if they were bigger though.

I looked at some fruit flies under a microscope at uni while doing some lab work on genetics. We had to knock them out using some chemical and under the microscope they look quite cute, twitching away as if they are experiencing a bad dream :p

I got branch sap too after baking! but it covers the whole thing like a varnish. Yours looks like jungle camo lol - when i first saw it, i was gonna to comment on the nice decor/paint job you did :o

I never baked any of mine. Straight out of the garden into the cage. Also Keyser Soze is your first picture a Congo or Giant Asian?

Its a Congo, he is much more pale than harold, and my other one is slightly darker green but with more brown areas.

Size is roughly to scale with the other image of the ghost.
