Hi guys,
Basically my current system is really beginning to struggle with, well everything. Gaming is impossible on it, and its getting slower and slower despite many defrags and registry cleans.

However, I am rather strapped for cash atm :(
So, I need your help and advice on a new AM3 DDR3 build - as it needs to last a fair while - that's the cheapest you can get it for some photo-editing and gaming.

The only hardware I can recycle are my HDD's, and the case and PSU. Dont need an OS a monitor or any peripherals.

I can get 2gb of DDR3 1333Mhz CAS7 RAM from somewhere I know so you don't need to include RAM in your specs :)

Was thinking MSI 770-C45, Athlon II X2 (X3 Rana chip would be nicer) but no idea with re to graphics.

TL;DR:
PC dying; case, psu, hdd can be re-used; no OS needed; no peripherals or monitor needed; need new build for gaming; cheap as you can.

Thanks guys,
Cookeh

Im really not sure on budget CAT, the cheaper the better - Id say around £200 excluding the RAM?

I assume that it is this 460W PSU:

http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/550

According to the review it actually can provide 430W.

Yes, sorry it is that one. Was getting confused with the Antec 480W I had before hand that sadly went BOOM! due to my sister being silly :(

and Thanks Stulid, how does a 4850 perform in modern games?
If I were to change to a 770 board, what would the performance difference be?

Thanks so far guys

The 760G chipset is basically a version of the 780G chipset with the HD3000 IGP. This lacks the UVD of the HD3200 IGP found in the 780G chipset. Also the 760G motherboards tend to also have the SB710 southbridge which supports ACC(needs to be enabled in the BIOS though).

At this rate you'll be forced to make some painful compromises, especially considering your gaming aspirations. Is there any way you could possibly save up a bit and stretch to 300 quid ?

Something like this would really get you going for a while :

Is there any advantage of 8 series chipsets compared to the 7 - other than USB3 and in some cases S-ATA3??

*Really needs to do some research on AMD chipsets*

And Ill see what I can sell in terms of lego, knex and scalectrix and hornby xD - Dont use any of it anymore.

Reckon I can put some of it up on MM? :p

You can get a 770 chipset AsRock board for £50. Then say a Phenom II X2 for £65 leaving £85 for the graphics, which i'd say your best bet is a 4770 or a GTS 250.

For motherboard just go for the MSI 770-C45 you original quoted.

770 chipset, good overclocker and ability to unlock extra cores for just £50. Not really sure if other similar priced motherboard perform on overclock, nor are they capable of unlocking extra cores.

Grab a Phenom II X2 550BE/555BE to try to unlock the extra cores. Even if the extra cores don't work, you would still have two fast cores.

C45 is a budget board and it shows, either get an AsRock M3A770DE or ASUS M4A77 for the same price or an MSI 770-G45 for a bit more.

I'm not saying it's a bad board, i'm just saying that it's best left for machines used in offices and home computers where people don't want to do any tweaking or anything.

As far as I can see, the only difference between the C45 and the G45 is an additional PCI-E slot - which runs at 4x so is useless for xfire :p

Feel free to correct me about differences though.
