My new pet

Yea i would have thought seen as though it hasnt eaten anything of any substance for quite a few days, it would have eaten either of them, including rippen legs off and wings and dangling them infront of it, or let them twitch like made..and i dont think its wanting to moult as he is constantly moving..getting worried (who would have thought that, about an insect lol)

Try something a little smaller, me might just not fancy a big meal :D

Most of my locust have now moulted into full adults so are wayyyyy too big for my adult congo, going to have a pop at breeding them :D

My Ghost had his first moult last night.. Woke up this morning and looked in, thought there was two of them at first! One was his old skin hanging from the top and he was sat there, slightly larger next to it! :)

Nice! Still waiting for mine, he's eating no end though so probably won't be ready for a while yet :p

Funny you should say that mine too lol, wonder did we buy them of the same guy lol, anyway mine is healthy, all limbs in place and working fine, and has a huge appetite once again :) one happy mantis owner.

My Ghost was murdered!!! :(

My own stupid fault, I put a small spider in with him yesterday and left it overnight, when I woke up this morning he had been bound and the spider was eating him.

Lesson learned.
Gutted.
RIP Optimus Prime :(

Wow thats quite harsh, but to be honest kind of expected in a strange way, still sucks :( RIP Optimus Prime.

Unfortunate, I would always be careful if I put a spider in with one, Spiders can be quite formidable, if it starts putting web around the enclosure, it won't end well for the mantis :(

Argh sorry to hear that :(

How large was the spider (excluding legs) compared to the mantis' body?

I had a tiny spider in with my mantids on the 1st day, but one of them had it's leg caught in a stray strand of web, so i took the spider out and haven't considered using them since.

Best to learn from what's happened and take the spider back out if it doesn't get eaten immediately i guess.

What other mantids do you still have?

Still have my 2 Congo Green's,

The spider was really small, body around 1/3 the size of the ghost's abdomen, like a money spider.

Silly mistake really. I have put spiders in before but as they have been eaten almost immediately there wasn't a problem, I guess the spider had time to spin a web around him.

I think if he could have got a grip on something he might have broken free but he was hanging in the web around 1 inch from the netting so he couldn't get a grip on anything.

Wasn't surprised by the spider's ability really and should have expected it.

Thats really unfortunate Keyser, I've fed my Congo plenty of spiders but I nearly always feed him out of his house and right in front me (students at exam time eh, revise or watch and feed my mantis :D ). Coming in with some good news my Congo, Harold, shed over the weekend when my friend was looking after him while I was away seeing Fake Blood and Rusko  Everything went fine though and he's now getting pretty big!! A couple of shots I took this evening:

My camera seems to take much better photos of him at this size!

Jack.

I'm really tempted to get one of these critters...

How much are the actual insects? I'm leaning mroe towards the ghost because their quite communal (I think, still need to read up more) although the Orchid one is beautiful.

I think mine might be getting ready for a shed, not eaten since yesterday and is sitting quite still (and he should be due one fairly soon) :p

My congo might be due a shed too, it's be acting kinda weird.
Also saw it dropping to the substrate to suck up water - first time i'd seen any of my mantids do that, it was kinda cute :)

I wish all of mine would just grow to adults ASAP, so that there's less complications.

This site seems to have good care sheets (link is for ghost mantis) that are species specific for all categories, rather than a generic 'small enclosure because mantids wait for prey' type bit of info.

I still can't believe the size difference from pre-moult to now, it looks like its head is massive.

Its looking pretty thin but I will hold out until tomorrow before feeding I have read this is the best procedure, any input on this?

Its nice to see the difference between the two now, I am hoping the other one will still be a slightly different colour when it moults so they don't look identical. I was hoping for a male and a female for variety but I think they are both female.

Wish I had my ghost still :(, think i'll buy another one or maybe 2 after download fest.

Yeah always give it a day or 2 after shed, mine took nearly a week to eat anything :)

Mine is a fat git now, feeding her a pre adult locust everytime her bum gets a bit small, dont want to over feed her :D

wow she must be pretty big to take locusts of that size, you got any locust breeding going yet?

Would like to see your setup when you do, i'm probably going to try breeding them myself hopefully I will have plenty still left over by the time they reach adult.
