Folding@home rig

180 plus p&p, apparently their new, bought for a system build that never got started 2 months ago? i guess £60 for each card isnt that bad. what do you guys think?

ive already got my gaming set up, and invested in the mobo for this build, problem is ive just gone into my flat/house savings to buy 3 8800 gtx's my fiance isnt very impressed but i bribed her by offering to buy her loads of holiday clothes and pay for her and a mare to go out next week. =D

In which case you bought the wrong motherboard :p

i think that because theyre the oc editions they come with the lifetime warranty, im not sure wether this gets carried over if they get sold on but they do come in the retail boxes with all accessories etc.

i cant get on the MM, id love to pop in and get 3, got a budget of £200 to spend basically, although i dont have a cpu, think i might get a q6600, and as for the ram just a budget 4gb kit, i dont think i need that much though, im guessing the rig would double up as quite a good gaming rig?

hmmm, got so much to think about, i thought with folding @home you didnt have to run sli with the cards, you can use dummy plugs, but i heard that with xp you didnt have to do this, i will be using xp as my os for this. Mayb 2 gts 250's would be good enough.

hey thanks for all the help so far, ive put a max bid in for a pair of 8800gt's instead, i will be able to run sli then and save £100 for the cpu. do you think a q6600 is worth around £75 off the bay?

Yeah, it should be if it's a clocker. Considering they're rougly on par with the Athlon II X4s (another reason you should have got the AM3 board :p).

if its boxed with heatsink, and confirmed to work(obviously) then I say go for it, but don't get carried away bidding to high.

that one went, the pic was a bit offputting, it looked all scratchet on the back, i suppose you can only take peoples word for it though on the bay. what other cpus could i go for that may be cheaper?

if your going to run the folding clients mainly on the graphics cards, then anything really, E6600?

The OP should check out the folding rig recommended this month on Bit tech:

It seems that any dual core should be fine if you are using folding clients which use graphics cards. Hence either one of the 45W Athlon II X2 or E5000 series processors would seem to be a good choice as they have relatively low power consumption.

TBH,I would go with at least a G92 based card since they are supposed to support a newer version of CUDA.

Also the 8800GTX will consume far more power than a bus powered 9800GT. The GTS250 gains 12 more stream processors and higher clockspeeds when compared to a bus powered 9800GT.

There's no reason you can't fold on the GPUs and the CPU though... hell, even if the chipset has integrated graphics then you might as well make use of it.

just wont 4 x 1Gb of GEIL 4GB PC2-6400 DDR2-800 on the bay for £50, should go quite well in the system, think i might hold out for a q6600 for around 60-70 ish instead of the e6600.

No sli needed for folding so as long as you have enough slots your can use four cards on a motherboard that doesn't even support sli.
For reference I paid 28 pounds for my 8800gt 512mb (112 shaders) this produces between 4500-5500ppd depending on the work units.

The important thing to look at when buying cards for folding is the number of shaders, for instance a gtx260 has 216 shaders so will be of similar performance to two 8800gt's but will use less power produce less heat and use less slots for a similar price.
