The REAL reason why they haven't been back to the Moon

Honestly HB's - why not actually read up on the Apollo program? There are some really good books out there. 'A Man On The Moon' by Andy Chaikin is as good a place as any to start.

I have never been to the Moon, nor do I know anyone who has.

This doesn't mean you can't create perfectly circumstantially-valid working models for the ideas postulated based on the evidence gathered by those that have.

I wasn't around 50 billion years ago, or whenever it was, when the galactic overlord Xenu decided to destroy trillions of beings by transporting them to Earth in prop-less DC-8s and detonated nukes on them after piling them into volcanoes, whilst forcing them to watch videos which caused all our major religions, but I know that didn't happen.

Lack of direct experience, when we're talking about the real world and not hi-falutin literal philosophical perspectives, does not by necessity impair your ability to reasonably make statements.

I have never been to the Moon, nor do I know anyone who has.

I've never been to the north pole, nor do I know anyone who has.

Does that mean I should believe someone who says it's warm there? Or that it's inhabited by unicorns?

We can assess the strength of claims regarding places we haven't been to and regarding events we didn't directly witness.

There is strong evidence supporting the USA moon landings being genuine. For example:

i) The mission was tracked by numerous people, including enemies of the USA who would have been overjoyed to find any evidence that it was fake.

ii) A very large number of people were involved, including many experts who would have known if the kit couldn't support a manned landing. All of them verify that it was legit. A successful conspiracy that large is highly improbable.

iii) A reflector array appeared on the moon during one of the missions, which strongly implies that the astronauts put it there (as can be seen on video). It can be (and repeatedly has been) detected from Earth.

iv) The video evidence (movement of people, objects, dust, etc) indicates a vacuum and low mavity. How could NASA have faked that in 1969? Messing with framerates doesn't cut it - slowed motion in 1g does not look exactly the same as motion in 1/6th g. The famous hammer and feather experiment would absolutely require a vacuum, though that might plausibly be created on Earth.

v) None of the alleged evidence of fakery stands up to scrutiny. It's all down to a lack of understanding of how various things work (e.g. multiple shadows from one light source, stars not appearing in photographs, non-parallel shadows, etc) and of the circumstances on the lunar surface (e.g. moving flags, displacement of dust, apparent visual anomalies caused by inability to judge size and distance correctly, etc).

thats his point... you cant fake a vaccum. they didnt fake a vaccum... they where on the moon. the flag was held by its own strength against its own weight (in moon mavity)

you can, they did on mytbbusters, however it proved that the flag did exactly what it should on the moon... (ie flapped about quite a bit from when it was stuck in the ground)

Did you witness it in south shields, if so where abouts?

Thats the wierd thing, it was in my parents back garden donkeys years ago during a thunderstorm. It matches all descriptions of it, yet I am not 100% sure that it could actually exist! I am sceptical dispite the evidence of my own eyes.

Anyway,
We landed on the moon. Fact.
The hubble has taken pictures of the landing stage. the LRO has taken images of the Apollo sites.

Has anyone else met any of the Apollo astronauts? I went to Autographica about 10 years ago and met Al Bean, Ed Mitchell, Walt Cunningham and Dick Gordon.

Al Bean was lovely, I had drove down from Scotland to meet them, and he took me to the bit in his book I had brought along about the first Scotsman on the moon, and did a lovely personal dedication in his book.

Thats what annoys me about the conspiracy theorists, there are real people who put their life at risk (Al Bean got his shot because of a plane crash killed CC Williams who was supposed to be the Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 12).

You can bounce a laser beam off the special mirrors left on the moon by some of the later landings. The mirrors are arranged such that you can fire a laser and you get a beam coming back the other way, no matter where you are on earth.

your telling me a computer with less computing power than a 90's mobile phone got to the moon? i dont buy it

mostly a large rocket got them there... why do you need loads of computing power to get to the moon? and dont forget the 400k poeple what worked on the project...

No, I'm telling you that a spaceship got to the moon.

What do you think the onboard computer needed to do? No graphics, no simulations, nothing apart from straightforward Newtonian physics. Also, the entire thing was custom-built for the purpose.

They initially tested not having a computer at all. It wasn't possible, but it wasn't so obviously impossible that they didn't need to test it. Even the most basic computer spanks any human for doing simple maths quickly.
