I'm thinking of buying a new scirocco, am I crazy?

VW will give me 7,5% off (I think I can get them to 10%) taking it down to 20k
You would be lucky, but it is worth a shot. You can get a 9% discount from online brokers like Orange Wheels, but the lead times on Sciroccos are huge (3months+). I strongly recommend you get rear parking sensors - you might as well not have a rear window when it comes to visibility.

I think the car will be worth 12k in 3 years (if not more as used car prices are crazy here) so overall excluding running expenses it should not cost too much, but is 16k a crazy amount to pay for a fancy golf? I will finance some of it but not all.
If supplies continue to be this short and VW don't bring out a major revision to the Scirocco (which looks likely), probably more than this. Buzz from car journalists is that they expect the current Scirocco to be a future classic (although I think that is expecting a bit much).

I just bought one, if you have questions feel free to ask.

I'm old, so my opinion will have little sway wiv d yoof but I think the 5 door Golf GTi is where you should look. Fatastic all rounder and buy nearly new to get the right deal and all the spec. I am not a fan of the wide arse skee rock o, Golf is much more practical but then I am not trying to look cool or pull d birds in it.

True but being his first proper car its probably a better idea to stick with the 1.4. Also the 2.0 will be a lot harder to sell after as the world if full of people that only want a tiny engine or a Diesel :(

He's 22, not 17.

At 22 I was driving a 265BHP hatch.

Now the list price is 21 500 (pounds)

I know it's a different country but if the dealerships are anything like the UK for discounts, that won't happen, especially with the supply / demand situation :p.

The price of nearly new GTis, at least in the UK, is very close to new prices, meaning that he'd never be able to get a GTi for anywhere near the kind of money he's looking at spending. Besides, he wouldn't be able to reclaim the VAT that's still absorbed in the second hand price if he buys privately.

I say go for it, as I'm biased and own a 2l tsi. Unless you need 5 doors I dont understand why anyone buys any of the faster golfs now the scirocco is available.

The supercharger improves power at low revs, turbo takes over at higher revs (~3.5k in the twin-charged TSi I believe). It's meant to improve driveability and smooth out the power band.

oh kk, so why not just fit a massive supercharger then which could cover all the revs??

A turbo, I guess, gives better fuel economy.

The supercharger is driven directly by your engine's usable power - the harder you want the pump the work (the higher your revs), the more engine power the supercharger takes in order to power itself. You get diminishing returns as revs go up.

The turbo on the other hand uses normally wasted hot exhaust to power the turbo, and the higher your revs the more 'power' that is available to the turbo pump. You get positive returns as revs go up.

Turbocharging is not always free energy, think about manifold pressure increase (turbines operate due to pressure differentials) and the effect this has on the cylinder getting rid of inert exhaust residuals.

Don't think that would work, its hard getting one FI device to cover the whole engine rev range, its either small and spools soon, or big and spools late.

+1

Not great reliability so i have heard from many of my vw owning peers!

Can't comment on that except, to say that my car's had zero problems since day one. As long as the turbo lasts five years, I'll be happy.

Got any links to reliability stats, as I'm a member on several VW forums and I haven't seen any '1.4 TSi engine failed' threads?

Because the Scirocco looks gash and has aged terribly the couple of years we've known it, and with the golf you get mk6 interior.
You get most of the good bits of the Mk6 interior in the 2010+ Scirocco (new climate control, steering wheel, cluster, media unit, gear sticks). The seats, door panels are unique to the Scirocco.
