Since when was the NSL 35mph?

i do wonder about the people who sit doing 50mph on the motorway on the inside lane with all the trucks overtaking them at 56mph.

I do wonder if you dont feel safe at any speed faster than 50mph, whether you should have a license at all ....

What about driving economically, or if you aren't bothered hurrying and just want a very relaxed drive ? Then again I never really drive slower than the car in front of me when I'm on the slow lane, just follow him at the same speed, but that is usually about 45-50 mph... I agree about the last comment, I cannot comprehend how people can be scared of driving on the motorway, it's them that it is the most relaxing to drive on. Certainly more relaxing that driving in any major city.

What goes through the overtaken drivers mind to warrant getting all hissy and angry, flashing lights and all.

They must be a few screws loose?

I once overtook a Rover 400 with a family in it doing 30 in a 60. It was a quite road only me and him so i kicked my little clio 1.2 down a gear and went for it as I did he put his foot down luckily I got past him just before he could cut me up while I was overtaking him. He then proceeded to follow me for 10miles right up my bumper doing 60 - 65 flashing lights and waving hands. The road then split into a bit of a dual carridge way so i accelerated to 70mph with him still right up my bumper.

I stopped at a red light where he stopped behind me and got out. At this point i was ****ting my self. I got out and was confronted by some guy giving me a lecture about speed etc. I explained to him why did he think it was safe doing half the national speed limit and it was a safe place to overtake. I walked away as I didnt want to continue this conversation and timed it just right so he would get stuck on a red phase of the lights.

I have zero tolerance for poor, bad and slow driving.

People who ride the brakes into corners, slow down stupid amounts, do not meet the speed limit then go into a 30 but are exceeding it. Total lack of awareness and ability to drive a vehicle.

I would kill for a "Private toll based road network" that you had to drive to a certain standard on. Average speed cameras used to make sure you make progress :D

One even flashed their lights at me (I'm guessing in disgust) when I performed a safe overtake on a long straight stretch.

I've had that and it's a curious thing...what exactly are they flashing for I wonder? Is it rage that I dared to overtake them in a perfectly safe manoeuvre whilst they were plodding along well below the limit?

I usually wish at that point that I had some kind of electronic message system in my rear windscreen so that I could convey to them how much I hate them.

I overtook a 4x4 once doing 40 in a 60 and he sped up and tail-gated me for miles, making ****er signs at me with his wife and kids in the back. Nice.

i think doing 50mph on the motorway while all the trucks doing 56mph overtake you has to be classed as hypermiling

no normal person would put up with having 40 ton artics directly up their rear for the sake of a few £

People who ride the brakes into corners

They may be driving automatics and thus unable to "engine brake"

dunno if anybody's said this yet but the reason driving lessons don't pre-pair you for the motorway is because its illegal to drive on a motorway without a full licence, its a catch 22

I never understand why old people drive so damn slow, you would think knowing you have less time left would be a motivation...

Is there some sort of double meaning to that that i'm missing, or am I just being anal?

Just a quick question that's slightly related. Why is the NSL sign the way it is rather than just a 60 in a red circle?

Meh. Perhaps I should have read the highway code when I was learning.

Still. Why not just put 60 or 70?

The NSL hasn't always been 60/70mph. I think at the begining of motorways in thsi country it was open to interpretation and therefore more or less unlimited and has seen been reduced to what we have today and no doubt one day it may be changed again in some manner. Saves millions in signage and such.

I'm putting it down to the increase in fuel costs and people trying to save money.

I'd agree with that, blame all these crappy One Show type programs/local news programs that drill it into you that driving at the speed limit and even below it reduce fuel usage!

Well, in Northern Ireland for your first year after your test you're restricted to a max of 45mph. Some ancient bs law that for some reason nobodys ever looked at and wondered "wtf".

Fair doos. That sounds logical enough :)

I got stuck behind someone on an NSL doing about 25 today. Then a bus broke down. Then a train went accross a train crossing in town that has not been used in about a billion years. It was the most frustrating journey ever.

People hogging the outside lane when the inside lane is free on dual carriage ways is what really annoys me.

I drive down a 6 mile stretch of dual carriage way, that is initially 40, then 50, then 70 for about the last 3-4 miles. It's amazing how many people drive a constant 50-60 down the outside lane the whole stretch of road.
