My new pet

KnightStalker not seriously crappy - amazing pictures! So small, yet so complex, brilliant.

Hi Stealth!

You should take similar pics as he grows (is that your thumb in the first two pics? Good for size reference) :)

Funny you should say that mine too lol, wonder did we buy them of the same guy lol, anyway mine is healthy, all limbs in place and working fine, and has a huge appetite once again :) one happy mantis owner.

Nice pics there.. Wish I had a better camera than my Hero to take photos of mine with!

Think mine was off of McNeil something or other on Ebay..

There's a ton of Giant Asians available for 50p each on the uk mantis forums.
I'd get some myself if i had a food source for when they're fully grown

Woo Mr Congo moulted in the last few hours, no problems.

I should be able to get pics of my mantids/housing/fruit fly culture mess soon.

Congratulations :D

Tried mine with a slightly larger locust this morning but it still wasn't interested.

Eating a small one now though so all is well.

The other one is still eating as normal so will be a bit behind.

just buy a tub of size 1 locusts or a couple and keep them seperate they will grow as your mantids do so by the time they are bigger you will have a nice collection of big locusts.

That is what I am hoping anyway.

I did have a think about what food i could breed for a large species such as the Giant Asian, and it was naturally down to crickets, locusts or roaches.
Roaches seem best on paper, but hmm... i'm not sure i can handle one!
Crickets have a higher chance of snacking on your mantids, so they were an immediate no-no.
Locusts seem ok.. are they easy to catch/handle? Is it easy to transfer them from their tub into your mantis home? And if they slipped out, would they be easy to catch? lol

I would choose locusts as they are very quiet, they are in my bedroom so its necessary.

They pretty much only come out when its light/you have the light on and stay dormant during the night. They don't emit any noise and only make any sound jumping. I have one of those exo terra faunariums with the lift up lid, you can just stick your hand in and shake it about a bit and one will jump into your hand, (maybe a bit more difficult if there is just one or two in there). They are quite nice looking too.

I probably wouldn't mind roaches either but they are a bit more ugly/creepy and probably much noisier.

The locusts eat loads though and need feeding regularly from what I have read, I am currently putting 6 or 7 large dandelion leaves a day in for about 25 medium sized locusts. They eat it all.

They are easy to catch if they escape, they generally sit in one place but can jump quite far. I currently have one under my desk somewhere lol, jumped out of my hand when I was trying to transfer it to my mantis housing and it got under my desk and I couldn't find it. will probably turn up at some point.

Ive just noticed something, just fed Stealth and instead of the food coming to him, Stealth is sprinting for the food at linford christie pace lol pretty cool to watch, also he likes to catch 2 flys at a time and somehow keeps hold of them both while eating just one..i need more mantis, ive been bitten by the bug.

I've noticed that too Knight!

People say Ghost Mantis' are a very slow species but that is just a ruse, they can't half shift if they're hungry :p

Oh, people who might be interested in getting a Mantis, look here (you need an account) -

http://www.ukmantisforums.co.uk/man...iant-asian-mantis-2nd-instar-nymphs-sale.html

Cheap enough Giant Asian Mantis Nymphs (50p + postage), easy to look after and they are very durable compared to some of the more fancy species :p

They also get pretty big, which will be a change from the little Ghost I have!

I think I might get a couple :p

Care Sheet incase you wondered about housing and whatnot - http://www.ukmantisforums.co.uk/man...a-giant-asian-mantis-giant-indian-mantis.html

wow she must be pretty big to take locusts of that size, you got any locust breeding going yet?

Would like to see your setup when you do, i'm probably going to try breeding them myself hopefully I will have plenty still left over by the time they reach adult.

Well ive just gon and bought my self a crested gecko :D

He also is on locust every alternate feeding so hes on stage 3, got the mantis some more sub adults and just thrown them all in a "medium" faunarium.

Got a bamboo cane going diagonally across it and 3 half egg packets upside down in there with crushed weetabix on the floor, will be mixing in some porridge oats when the weekly shop comes on Saturday :p

Then have a plastic pint pot crammed full of eco soil that was left over from my gecko setup. Just going to stick them ontop of my snake viv above his ceramic as its rather warm up there and leave them too it, think they need it a tad warmer but if they dont breed im not losing anything the vast majority of them will get munched on by something :D
