Apple is now bigger than Microsoft

If you want a cheap, consumer smart phone for the masses then get an Android phone. If you want something a bit more special get an iPhone. That's the way I see it anyway :)

Wait, what has a preference of OS have to do with someone's choice of MP3 player?

I think that was my fault

as I made the statement apples are not focused enough( well not in MP3/PMP) terms and thier PCs are under powered for thier MS equivalent, not saying they are useless or anything lol. great for graphics design. about it

The way I see it is that yes the revenues of MS and Apple may be very close now but their products are very different.

Microsoft's is primarily a software company that makes a few pieces of hardware. Apple is primarily a hardware company that also sells an OS.

MS is dominant in the enterprise sector and that won't change anytime soon as it would be a logistical nightmare to transition thousands of users from one completely different OS to another. Also Windows based PCs are cheaper, the overwhelming majority of consumers shop on a limited budget and Apple computers usually don't fit into this budget.

Both MS and Apple are software companies. There isn't even a hardware difference between a Mac and PC any more as both are built on a x86 platform. The only difference is the software that runs inside. It's the same with mobiles- nearly all smart phones are ARM powered, with samsung RAM and some random asian screen. There was nothing amazing about the iPod's hardware, although it was nice. What made it a success was the hassle free ability to legally download songs/albums for a reasonable price- i.e iTunes.

Based on those things I'd say MS is in a safer and more stable market segment than Apple and would be a safer investment! Note that I didn't say better investment!

Neither are a safe bet IMO. Now I am not saying that it's RIP Apple/MS but everything seems to be pointing to cloud computing and that is a game changer. If O/S's become less important then Microsoft loses it's grip on the market and there is no reason to buy expensive Apple hardware to run Apple software.

Actually, with the current raft of phones available, only a complete chutney ferret would buy an iPhone.

well over 34million chutney ferrits out there then...

I'm to tight to replace my phone, but I have set up a few smart phones for people and the Iphone seems the nicest so far (alough 10 phones / 3 models and 20mins on each is not really a good test)

the upsides to the ipod touch is

WIfi, app store/I tunes. its a interent tablet to be honest its not really a media player although it can be used as one. if you want to use it for a media device there are better options in my option out there *cough cowon J3*

Also itunes can be used with any media device that supports the format. thats what most people are forgetting

there is nothing special about apple on the outside ( as I said, fashion items) inside it still uses the same old stuff we have in our MS pcs, just on a different form

Surely the iphone is the more generic smart phone for the masses, and the android is better for the more technical user?

Not really in the case of MS, the cloud still needs server software and user licensing, MS OS's are now a very small part of MS's income and are becoming little more than brand awareness, they have long since moved on to licenses, even in the cloud you will still need a per user license.

Only if you like a good tinker. Take a none Jailbroken iPhone and a non Rooted/Custom ROM Android and you will find Android can do more "Out the box"

PC fanboy = person who refuses to accept that apple makes some decent products.

And how much extra did you pay for that satnav ontop of your £400+ phone?
32gb iphone = free because I actually make use of my phone. Don't know why payg users buy fancy phones, if payg is financialy better for you then you clearly aren't going to make the use of a decent phone.
The satnav that comes with the phone is actually a pretty decent app. Paid nothing for a famous satnav app after some software alterations.

Iphone alternatives just don't have the massive stream of decent applications that make the iphone.

Didn't like the android I tried, any of the HTC phones, blackberrys and the newer nokias didn't seem very durable compared to old or have anywhere near the functionality of the iPhone.

Surely Apple have more to fear from cloud computing than MS. Yes, applications and some storage may move to the cloud, but corporations will still keep their core infrastructure (i.e. servers, etc.) within their own environments. So MS will carry on with their server and licensing revenue (not sure what % of their revenue is based on this, but would have thought it was significant).

With more being done on the cloud, hardware will become less relevant (i.e. cheaper hardware will do the job just as well) which will ultimately hit Apple more.

I know that, which is why I said "primarily" indicating that they also make the other :)
What I was trying to get across was that Microsoft make most of their money from software while Apple makes most of their money from hardware which is true. It's also common knowledge that Apple computers are based on the same hardware as Windows computers and I didn't insinuate otherwise.
I think you just misunderstood :)

i think you meant £719 for the cheapest iPhone 3GS, £179.99 for the phone and £30 a month for 18 months, and that only includes 100 free minutes.

the sat nav app (TomTom for iPhone) is about £90 and is so expensive because it includes a whole new GPS receiver because the one in the iPhone is so useless.

Sorry yes this is what Im getting at. There is nothing special with an iphone compared to an android device apart from perhaps usability but if you have to be prety much retarded not to be able to use any of the smart phone OS.
