Apple is now bigger than Microsoft

Nope; didn't consider that. After a very brief look, £800 seemed to be the correct figure for a 27" IPS TFT.

If buying direct from Apple, your iMac is £1634. Shopping around, I saw a couple for £1500. So we'll stick to that lower price. We have £700 left then for the machine components. I'm being deliberately generous with pricing.

i5: £150.
mobo: £150.
HD4670: £50.
4gig RAM: £130.
1 TB hdd: £80.
Case: £100.
OSX: £25.
Kb/mouse £50
Optical drive £20

£755. In the right ball park. OK, so if we were to use enthusiast quality parts then the cost is approaching where it should be.

That's a big if, however.

They come with 4850's and I'd add a bit more on to the case side of things as an all aluminium housing in that form factor isn't cheap. Anyway that aside others in this thread are correct, Windows is still a powerhouse, market penetration is ridiculous in both the business and consumer world and I can't see that changing any time soon.

...and that price you quoted for OS X is the upgrade price if you already own Leopard, it's more like £89.

Thanks, genuine mistake. Was looking at the wrong column.

An OS that actually lets you do stuff, without having to buy other software to do such basic things like burn a dvd. Photo management software (iPhoto) , and no I dont mean paint lol. iMovie, iDVD, GarageBand etc...etc...etc...this is all on a new Mac, what does an XP or Windows 7 disc offer for the user, nowt but a basic OS.

Windows has failed to evolve, thats why Apple is gaining so much, and it isnt aimed at advance users, kids/grandparents can use an iPhone & iPad and mac.

oh and

What?
Windows burns cd's and dvd's from stock.
It has a basic photo editing app for red eye removal and contrast/brightness, and then there's also paint which is fine for most things tbh.
WMP plays dvd's fine.

They tried to evolve, the EU has stopped this however :(...

And lol, buy music and films, never heard of spotify or downloading for free ( tough luck that this is illegal in the UK, here it's legal provided you don't spread it.) ?

No.

Experience has lead to this fact. User experience and simplicity in its design.

The universal ego system for content, what other service besides iTunes allow you to buy a movies/music/tvshows/apps on your Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod & Apple TV?

So all Apple has to do is "surpass Microsoft" on consumer electronics and software and that means it's game over for Microsoft?

How naive.

Apple must wish things were really that simple. But they aren't that clueless.

I dont believe that at all, I realise the actual market share for its OS is tiny, but what relies me is peoples dismissive attitude to a piece of software they have not tried or understand, yet it offers a more rounded and complete experience for the user than a basic copy of Windows cannot.

They may over charge for their machines, but their machines are built to strict hardware specifications that reduce (as much as possible) problems for their users. In designs that an average PC builder could never achieve, unless your an PC enthusiast then I dont understand why people still build towers.

In My Opinion Macs were considered more like a designer gimmicks back in the day, software was good but hardware was bobbins, but since moving to Intel their machines are just as powerful as any other PC outlet, but you dont get the best of both worlds with the software. THATS what makes Apple different.

Now excuse me while I go bog with my iPhone and watch some Avatar, or play Angry Birds. :p

OK, last try, being uber generous now.

£940. + £800 monitor = £1740. Apple's price £1634 (£1500 in shops).

Well, since we're spending £200 on a case here (which gets lols from me), I think I'll just have to suggest that Mac buyers are happy to splash the cash.

Personally I've never spent more than £100 on my case; it lives under my desk and isn't something I care about being beautiful. And in fact to this day I consider it a mistake to have spent that much on it.

So we'll just put mac buyers in their own section, and label them as "pretty flush". :p And that's as fair and un-biased as I can be :p

You're too stuck at looking at numbers on paper. I don't have any MS operating systems installed on any machine besides my 360, and I haven't had in years. I have never come unstuck. I've never thought ****, I wish I had a Windows machine.

I really do think that if you really got stuck in with a Mac, you'd see what I meant. I also know that you probably never will, and you'll continue searching for negatives.

But honestly - if you could just try it, properly, you'd see. It's just... nice.
This is all just my opinion.

Havn't had an MS OS in years, but you think someone who has only had a MS OS
would prefer a Mac? Perhaps you should try a Win7 machine then. For the price
of a Mac Pro (£1940) you could buy a win7, i7 system with 6gb memory,
with eyefinity. Which; depending on your needs, can be much faster and
more suitable. "I have never come unstuck. I've never thought ****, I wish I
had a Windows machine." I've never thought that with a windows/linux machine
either. I personally don't see the need for a Mac other than video editing, which
a Windows machine can do perfectley well imo; or to show off. I prefer the ability
to customise my computer as I see fit, which Windows and Linux both offer more
than a Mac.
"I haz a Mac!!!"
"Is yours the cheap version with 1 button, or the expensive with 2 buttonz?!"
"2 buttonz!"
"Zomg you must be so cool!"

"a mac would better suite most poeple" "macs jsut dont go wrong enough a 4 year old mac is likley to be about as fast as the day it was brought, they dont get hammered with virus' and they are way too easy to restore."

I think if Mac's were to become more affordable, M$ would most likely pull it's finger
out and produce something better. There simply isn't a need at the moment. As
for Mac's reliability, perhaps it is coincidence, but I have never had a BSOD on a
Windows machine, nor any sort of breakdown, though some of my friends get
serious problems with their macs every year or two. A word on viruses, if Mac's
were to become the worldwide standard for computers, they would certainly encounter
many more 3rd party threats. I don't think Apple has anything over PC's at the moment,
though Google looks like it may pose a significant threat to M$.

Mac's used to quack when they died.

You are comparing the cost of a 4 core workstation with XEON processors to a consumer gaming rig.

How much are the dell workstations of similar spec? I'm betting you can build a better gaming PC for the price of that too.

As you say.. that may not be suitable for what you're doing; a gaming PC is useless if you don't need it.

Any particular reason you use $ instead of S in MS? I thought only 14 year old's did that still.

If you want a cheap, consumer smart phone for the masses then get an Android phone. If you want something a bit more special get an iPhone. That's the way I see it anyway :)

Just noticed this post.

Oh deary me, change special to "basic".

Only someone so blinded by the fact they are paying over the odds for an iPhone would see it like this :(

You are joking right?

What is your tarrif so we can all have a giggle. And then x that by your contract lenth (18 or 24)

And tell me your mins/text/data is worth a grand :D

18 months, 1200 minutes, unlimited texts, unlimited internet. £35 a month.
But I've been with them a long time, usually go over the minutes and get into about 1000 texts a month. Use the internet on it a lot as well.

Employer gives me £10 a month toward phone costs as a good will gesture (seeing as I use it for work), just use that to pay the insurance.

You can't deny that the iPhone is a very good phone.

Apple makes some crap products (Macbook air, ipad). But they make more decent products than they do bad ones if you ask me.
As far as software goes logic is by far the best music editing program I have ever used, and i've tried all the pc counterparts.

Based on latest share price then Microsoft is back on top.
Much ado about nothing really, who cares who is bigger.

Does this mean we can start calling them "Appl€" now? I quite like the symmetry in that spelling, and the effect of the Euro symbol looking like some kind of demonic protrusion coming out of their name. :p

I would say Microsoft and Apple have more to fear from the Open Source community.

Desktop os, server OS, phone OS, cash machine OS, Sat nav OS etc etc etc etc

....However, Microsoft still enjoys higher profits than Apple. Its most recent annual net profit was $14.6bn (£10bn), compared with $5.7bn for Apple.

Microsoft also reported bigger full-year revenues of $58.4bn, with Apple on $36.5bn.

I think the excitement is a little premature
