Desier/One vs iPhone

Why though?

I don't know, I like playing with them (modding) and various other things!

You might call it a hobby :p Planning on selling the iPhone and N900 though, not much use for them.

My girlfriend seems to like the Hero though so I think I'll give her that ;)

As nobody has directly answered your questions like this, I'll answer them, from the N1/Desire perspective, they are both essentially the same, although I'd say the Desire edges it, especially now it's safe to flash due to the bricking problem being solved.

Anyway, i suppose key usages/points for me:
- Exchange support (mail, calender, contacts). - Yes, both can do this without a problem.
- With multiple extra IMAP accounts for my google stuff. - Yes, both can do this without a problem.
- Battery life compared to an iPhone 3g. - Better. (By quite a bit, and far far FAR easier to improve due to your control over the phone).
- Bluetooth that can chuck the audio and calls to my handsfree in my car. - Yes, tried it in a few cars and not had a problem yet, older phones often didn't work well with steering wheel buttons etc.
- Stability of the OS. - Very stable. Equal to the iPhone just about, don't think you would ever have a problem there.
- Responsiveness of the screen compared to any apple touch screen? - Quite a step up from the iPhone one, far more responsive to softer touches so you can smudge a bit less :p
- Good selection of apps? - Anything you can get for the iPhone, you'll most likely be able to get for this, it's Google's baby, it'll grow exponentially this year even more.
- Ability to buy apps/music/audiobooks on the move? - Yes, all fine here.
- What do i use to 'sync' it? - HTC Sync, Google Mail/Calendars and so on. It'll sync with just about anything you'd expect to be able to Sync it with one way or another.
- Is the successor to the Desire/One around the corner? - Nothing has been confirmed that would beat it yet, so you are quite well futureproofed, although this is always an annoying issue when it comes to phones, especially HTC.

Anyway, i suppose key usages/points for me:
- Exchange support (mail, calender, contacts). Google fullstop. Contacts mail calander docs etc etc etc. I solely use google for everything.
- With multiple extra IMAP accounts for my google stuff. Not too sure but I'm guessing itd be fine as its google based!
- Battery life compared to an iPhone 3g. As said, double easily. (with live wallpapers etc etc too)
- Bluetooth that can chuck the audio and calls to my handsfree in my car. Not used bluetooth yet!
- Stability of the OS. Android seems pretty stable and has a lot of customisation right out the box.
- Responsiveness of the screen compared to any apple touch screen? as said, seems great, few niggles but mostly worked out :) The screen is an eye opener compared to the iphone though
- Good selection of apps? Yup, people are developing more, and the communities are awesome for android stuff (system wise)
- Ability to buy apps/music/audiobooks on the move? Yup, and even more so in the coming year according to google IO.
- What do i use to 'sync' it? A usb cable :D Or for gmail etc it auto does it when you first turn the phone on.
- Is the successor to the Desire/One around the corner? I wouldnt say so, not for a while. The nexus one quoted by google has "a long way to go" yet in terms of upgrades etc etc.

one thing i can say, i love how "open" the android is.

After being in the jailbreak scene you can do much more freely on the android base, emulators etc are all avail, and the forums such as modaco and xda push the devices so far.

Thanks for the summerys Robboftw & Psypher5.:)

I think i may take a trip to CPW tomorrow, go and have a nosey at them.
Im suprised by the touch screen responsiveness, ive often been under the impression that most phones are lacking compared to the iPhones...

Been working out cheapest way to get one.
Basically the phone costs £400 sim free. So on a 30 day rolling 02 Simplicity for 12 months, overall it would cost me £640.
Or on a fixed term simplicity 12 month contract, £580.

Hmm.
Honestly cant decide wether to get it Sim free or branded/on a contract if i was to go for one.

Anyway, how exactely are purchases for apps/music/etc made on the move? For example on iPhone the stores are linked to my iTunes account. How are they worked on Android? To a paypal account perhaps...?

Phones were once lacking to iPhones, thanks to HTC that is (and always will be due to the speed they release things, 10+ phones this year so far), it's a thing of the past.

Have a look at Mobiles.co.uk/Mobilephonesdirect, they are unbranded models and have VERY good deals.

Amazon Store works very much like iTunes and you can buy mp3s on the move and preview them etc. I've not looked into it that much, you can also get Spotify working on it, and just stream songs free. (Which is fine on the good data packages, keep to T-Mobile/O2 if you can)

Something like TuneSync would allow you to transfer the mp3s back onto iTunes and so on, as if you've bought them from there. Or just do it manually. Always plenty of options for everything ;)

And paid for with Google Checkout, as mentioned by D D Danneh!

Ah, thats handy if its through Amazon then.
TuneSync looks handy, am i correct in thinking that it'll fool iTunes into thinking the Android device is an Apple one? Or as good as?
Anything around that'll do it wired (im thinking speed. lol).

Next, Desire or Nexus One?
Desire has the nice GUI and the memory to cope with it (and a bigger memory card in the box), but the Nexus one gets updates quicker and has a better mic.

Thoughts on that one?

I don't think there's much difference with the mics really, it's certainly not a main point about the difference between the two.

Assuming everything not mentioned below is identical just about, the gains of the Desire over the N1 (which plus points you have mentioned) are -

  • HTC Sense UI, you may prefer this over the default Android UI, as it is lacking the fancy widgets the Sense UI has. That is personal preference though, I quite like the Android Launcher for a change, but I'm used to Sense from my old Hero.

  • Optical Trackpad instead of a Trackball. I don't like Trackballs so this is a very nice plus for me :p

  • Hardware buttons instead of the ones integrated into the screen on the N1, quite a lot of people don't like them, personal preference again though.

  • Far far better deals on the Desire at the moment.

  • More memory on the Desire.

Oh, and updates aren't really a biggie, thanks to XDA/Modaco the Desire is never far behind, even more so now there's no USB problems :)

I have no problems with the mic on the Desire and none of my calls resulted in people saying they couldn't hear me loud enough like they used to on the HTC Magic for example.

Also Voice to Text picks up multiple words just fine, obviously those with accents won't favour the voice activated stuff and text very much because this feature does favour non accented vocab!

Google Maps navigation will impress the most I feel as it is so robust and integrated with the Google "system" and makes life so much easier.

For example a friend moved into a new place recently and he texted me the address. All my SMS messages get backed up in gmail so O copypasted the address into Google Maps from Firefox and told it to direct me. I then sent the directions link to myself (gmail) and clicked the link on the phone and it auto started Google Navigation and began navigating.

This saved me from having to search the destination on the phone keypad and so on, just makes things much easier and you can then later label that email you sent yourself in Gmail and archive for future use or whatever.

Obviously with Android 2.2 and the rollout of web to phone in Chrome 5 (and hopefully Firefox) the above is made as simple as a single click :p

Oh and got favourite places/POIs and stuff saved in Google Maps on your browser? hit the layers button and they will show up on your Phone maps app too!

nexus looks better ;) And has google written on it, has more of the "wow" factor, as no one really has one.

nexus can do sense UI,
i prefer touch button not hardware buttons.
its "lacking" memory is only like 40 meg?
i prefer a glowy customisable trackball <3

youll pay ~ 400quid for a nexus though on the bay. Unless you vodaphone contract it.

So i take it i have to link the Desire/Nexus One to one of my Google Account for some of the fancyier features?

Whats the messaging app like? Is it threaded like on iPhone?
What about app & music DRM? And backup of purchased stuff?

DRM? :p

Yes you should link your Google account with it on first startup. Messaging is a bit different but is threaded somewhat although it can look iPhone like via Handcent:

And the stock Desire Messaging app:

I've moved to Gmail from Hotmail (I hated it anyway and it needed doing), the integration is just awesome.

I've got my car kit all fitted now too and Google Navigation is by far the best Sat Nav I've ever used, integrated with Street View it is just something very special. :D

The RAM issue is a non starter, Sense uses more RAM than Launcher2, and on the Nexus I always have at least 100MB usually ~250MB without using a task killer, and Android will auto kill tasks if you do somehow find a way to use all that RAM.

The Desire will seriously lag in terms of official updates, but as was pointed out earlier the Dev community help narrow that gap.

Ultimately unless the first thing you're planning on doing is rooting and messing with it, you should get the Desire, its £10 p/m cheaper, and the Nexus is not worth the extra £180-£240 over the length of the contract :)

Im just trying to consolodate 4 google accounts into one as i type this. :p
Mainly so ive got one central account for my stuff on my iPad, but also so i can use it with an Android device if needed. :p

So what about DRM on the apps then? If i lose them do i have to repay for them for example?

You will need a Google Checkout account, which just adds card info to you standard account. You use this Checkout account to pay for apps through the Marketplace, and the account remembers the purchase, so if you sign in on a new phone you can re-download all you purchased apps

Hope that makes sense/ answers you question

Are you using the 'SMS backup' app?

I've been using that but it doesn't seem to back up my most recent messages, or my oldest, a seemingly random segment in the middle!

How do you have it configured?

There isn't really much to configure in it, as long as it can auth your gmail account it will backup messages. I've been using it since I got the HTC Magic so all my SMS messages spanning the last 18~ months are in my Gmail too.

Yeah, sorry, fixed it now. :) Just needed to do a few backups to get through all the messages. It confused with the limit per backup and some of the conversation lengths (100+ messages).
