Valve has a surprise for us..

indeed that's another possibility.

the engine starting to age, having said that unreal engine dont look that great nowdays, as most games have a standard look if you know what I mean

the unreal engine can look every good, it/'s the art direction that makes them all look the same.

the upto date unreal engines and thier customisations for your game are fairly expensive so you have to make a pretty safe game to make sure you can sell enough to cover costs.

oh yeah I forgot about this but theres a good chance it could be the dota game valve are woking on

"Valve Unveiling DotA Dev's Project "Soon" by Chris Faylor May 03, 2010 11:00am CST tags: Valve, DotA Having joined Half-Life and Team Fortress series developer Valve Software in October 2009 after years of maintaining and furthering the popular Warcraft 3 mod Defense of the Ancients: Allstars, the mysterious man known only as "IceFrog" has teased that Valve will "be making an announcement soon" regarding his new project. "There are a lot of very talented people here at Valve that are working hard on it every day to ensure high quality in a timely manner," he explained on his DotA Blog. IceFrog had previously teased that his role at Valve would be "great news for DotA fans," adding "I finally have all the resources needed to do some very exciting stuff." In addition, IceFrog explained how he came to be employed by Valve: It started off with an email from Valve where they mentioned that they were big fans of DotA wanted to fly me out to spend some time with them and visit their studio. I wasn't quite sure what to expect from the trip. After arriving and chatting with them, the first thing I noticed was how much of their decision making process was like mine. They shared the same aspirations towards building a long term and sustainable community without having short sighted business goals that end up hurting the quality of the game. One of the most important things for me though was that there wasn't going to be anyone standing above telling me how I should be doing things. They trust the developers that have experience to make the best decisions for their playerbase. The atmosphere at Valve allows everyone to be very comfortable and able to focus on what they love doing. It also doesn't hurt that they are huge DotA fans.. until their favorite heroes are nerfed, then I'm the bad guy for a week!"]Valve Unveiling DotA Dev's Project "Soon" by Chris Faylor May 03, 2010 11:00am CST tags: Valve, DotA Having joined Half-Life and Team Fortress series developer Valve Software in October 2009 after years of maintaining and furthering the popular Warcraft 3 mod Defense of the Ancients: Allstars, the mysterious man known only as "IceFrog" has teased that Valve will "be making an announcement soon" regarding his new project. I wouldn't have thought CS2 would be around for some time yet, otherwise why bother with the current CS:S:BetaUpdate.

I hope it ep3, i really don't want them to just extend ep3 and call it hl3, i want hl3 to be built on an entirely new engine with better graphics than the source can currently provides

It will be something to do with Half-Life.

I just can't see it being CS3, it doesn't seem to be on their priority list. No new maps for ages, the current beta is nothing to shout about.

How about TF3? :)

nah source is 6 years old, it needs replacing tbh.

while it does textures well it's terrible for detailed models, its on of the few current engines that looks ancient with it's straight polys.

Are straight polys something that can be fixed by a major upgrade, or is it a whole new engine jobbie? I don't know enough about engines to really say what requiers a new engine or just an upgrade. I do agree it's dated in places, but in other places it's still pretty out there. Facial animations and lip synching I haven't really seen bettered yet.
I guess a lot depends on the results of their hardware surveys. They won't release a killer engine a la Crysis if people out there don't have the hardware for it. I still think there's a bit of life left in Source yet to be honest.

It wont be HL3 released before EP3, they're not that stupid.

I'll put my money on some kind of New Engine announcement to replace Source, but it wont be available straight away until they've finished updating the current Source games.

Half Life 3 could just be Episode 3 + more.

They don't have to release another episode. Tbh I think its the opposite. They would be a bit stupid to release another episode tied to the Half Life 2 title. They need to release a brand new game in the series.
