Valve has a surprise for us..

...I keep looking at the Black Mesa project (for those that don't know the HL 1 graphic remake thingy) But man that thing just never feels like it is ever going to be finished.

Don't say that! :p They tried for a 2009 release, and for various reasons couldnt make it. It'll be this year fo' sho'......hopefully :o

The episodes are Half Life 3. I remember Gabe saying that somewhere in an interview, although I don't have a source.

Which would be a huge cop-out if true. The episodes recycle and re-use all the assets from HL2.

A new game (call it HL3 or HL4) would not feel so much like an expansion pack. Likely new story, new setting, new models, weapons, graphics... need I go on?

So to say "the eps are your HL3" and expect us to buy it is shocking. It would amount to laziness on the part of the devs; or if not laziness, an unwillingness to spend much time/effort on HL franchise when they favoured making L4D and other projects instead. Understandable, but you can't pull the wool over our eyes by saying stupid things like "episodes = new game."

I guess it depends on your definition of sequel. If sequel to you means new assets then sure, you're getting short changed. Pretty sure to Valve it means building on what took them many years to create and continuing one of the most engaging stories in video game history.

I'm really quite happy with what Valve have done so far, and I will be if Episode 3 concludes Freemans story.

Gotta agree, just wish that they would actually get the point of episodic releases and bring something out relatively frequently, rather than waiting until i can't even remember what happened in the last episode :p

CS:S is CS2, with CZ being CS1.95 or smth

I can see Valve doing CS3 but taking it closer to what BC2/MW2 are (without vehicles though)

Im afraid your wrong. cs:s is counterstrike (source) when the new cs is released it will be called counter strike 2 . Already confirmed by gabe.

who knows we may get some funny colour pack with a new portal and new hl episode and maybe a new cs game thrown in :p

Well that entirely depends on the length of time taken to produce said sequel. Which, let's not forget, was the reason Valve switched to episodic content.

No one would mind re-use of assets, engine, etc, if the episodes were coming every few months (or annually at least).

Taking several years to release new episodes + re-using assets is pretty shocking. It simply highlights the fact that their dev teams have been working on other projects.

I'd love the announcement of a new engine by Valve. As much as I love source, it is starting to look dated (though not terribly), and technical limitations of the engine affect gameplay possibilities (for example maximum map size I remember being thrown around).

Hasnt that already been annouced (effectively) and will be called Tactical Insertion ?

Minh Le (who co-wrote the original CS) is on the Dev team so it should be a cracker !

No, Tactical Intervention is a whole seperate thing from CS. Minh Le went his seperate way after the CS dev team went to Valve.
