If if has almost paid it off at 25 he must be earning a sizeable amount?

He also says his debt was 9k though, a lot less than most peoples after uni. I guess he was on the old system and lived at home through uni, or supported himself. Either way you wouldn't have to be earning that much to have it paid off by 25, not enough to be considering a 50k car IMO.

Thats because he still lives at home it would seem.

Personally rather than blowing 50k on a car and living with my mum and dad, id much rather spend say, 10k on a nice car and start saving towards living on my own. Cant be good for when you offer to invite the ladies in for a coffee that you have to tell her not to wake your mum :D

Hmmm, not sure how you're taking the **** out of someone else, your wife made you sell your car and buy a Volvo. ;)

And the post you quoted was from 2 years ago - in much more recent posts he states he actually owns a house, but rents it out because he prefers being with his family.

Anyway, this is taking it far off topic - OP get test driving and thinking about what kind of car you want :)

what, that just proves that i mean what i said.

I would rather have my own house (which i do) than an expensive car and live at home with mum and dad. We sold the car. Not the house. not sure what your point is ?

Audi S5

- Looks flash: X
- Can accomadate four people: X
- Your mm can drive it: X
- Performs well: X
- Costs: X

Well, costs; insurance shouldn't be a problem. Driving 2 - 5k, petrol won't be an issue. If something goes wrong you'll have a warranty. MOT costs are minor. Servicing costs are relatively minor aswell.

There's really little benefit to paying off your student loan in one lump. You'd rather have that 10k cash in the bank.

(I was suppose to quote LoLs post)

There are many reasons I want to buy a car. I don't understand why there is so much negatvity here.

Yes part of me wants to spend a certain amount so I can have a better car then others I know. But I freely admit this and this is vain but only a small part of the reasoning behind any car choice i make.

If the vain aspect wasn't important we would all drive around in crap cars and not expensive car. Even 10k is stupidly expensive to spend on a car for a lot of people.

I will keep it shiny and polished of course but this won't be the reason I buy it. I enjoy driving and the finer things in life. So of course i want something that looks good, we all do!

I am just learning about cars now and ideas for what I could reasonably spend.

Performance is important to me but most of my driving will be in town but none the less I want it to be fast and handle well.

I can't be more honest or candid here. I just don't see why some people here are reacting the way they are?

Because what you have asked is the equivalent of "I really like music, particularly the good sort of music that people like that has a tune and words. What should I listen to?"

Or "I would like to buy a house. My budget is up to £750,000 but it can be less than that. It needs to be lovely to live in and a nice enough area, I spend most of my time at home living and sleeping of course, so the house needs to be ideal for this. If it impresses my peers, then all the better! Suggest away"

Decide what you want and need and then come back.

Classic American muscle car. You then donthave to worry about being the newest car all the time as your clasic will always be cool :)

1: You're not really into cars
2: You currently have a £2K Astra
3: You can spend up to £50K
4: You have no idea what is important to you and have driven nothing yet
5: You wonder why people think your arse is talking, right?

Gotta love this place.

OK I haven't seen this thread in a few hours but jut to prove I am not talking out of my arse, someone elses words and not mine, what would I need to show to prove I am not disingenuous?

What kind of salary do you think would support getting up to a 50k car, as a general rule of thumb? Again I know this is a how long is a piece of string question and dependent on outgoings but generally there will be a correlation with income bands and the cost of the car being driven (maybe possibly!). Just humour me here...

Besides posting part of my payslip I am not sure what else I can do. Maybe I will get a rude awakeneing and find out I don't earn enough for the cars I like but I think the sums add up.

To answer other posters I am actually a city professional in the square mile (not banking though). I have a maths degree and I graduated five years ago this July/August. My student loan of just under 10k will be paid off by the end of the year.

I am in no rush to pay it off. It will be gone soon enough. I own a house but it is rented out and the rent covers the mortgage. I think I am very lucky as most people my age don't own properties full stop let alone above average house price houses.

I have no intention of moving out yet and I wouldn't unless I was in a serious relationship.

I wouldn't do the one night stand or short term gf thing even if it was offered out on a plate to me. I was planning the car as a bit of a treat for the hard work over the last few years.

And like I said before after the house purchase I don't have 50k in cash right now, that would need finance. But that amount would be in reach early to mid next year.

All my posts have been from my iPhone today as I can't use my pc so spelling and post structures have been a little off.

And even if I could post credible evidence people would just say I was willy waving and I am sure if it is sufficently anonomised people would just say I am a fraud. If anyone here works close to bank station drop me a email for a coffee and you can see how serious I am.

Do you speak from experience?

Unsecured loans for £50k are far from easy.

Does this guy come across as a city professional?

As I mentioned before the loan would not be for 50k I would obviously have some cash also. Plus I said financing not just an unsecured loan, that covers various methods including hire purchase and leasing options. I would only need a couple of grand cash for the deposit by my limited research but these are obviously not always the smartest way to buy a car.

You shouldn't be so judgemental also. I have been honest from my first post about everything. I am not sure what an average city professional seems like to you but I am who I am one and I am not hiding anything. Not only am I successful in my field (which is some what respected ish) I am probably one of the best in my age group and want to be one of the best full stop.
