New Car: 350z

Yeah it comes with all the adaptors but to keep the steering wheel controls you need to slice in to it, which could prevent me from putting the standard bose back in when I come to sell.

That's how I've been reading it anyway, I'm sure Booner! or Albo will correct me.

Well the thing I linked to is just the adapter for the controls, I was under the impression that you just buy this and plug one end into the car, then the other into the stereo :p

It's what I've done on a couple of other cars.

Very nice that, big fan of 350Zs.

For some bizzare reason they're well easy to insure.. I quoted myself on one the other day with 1 Fault Claim, 2 Years NCB and it was coming about the same... never understood why.

Take it easy :)

You have to splice into the looms, so yeah...makes it very hard to replace the BOSE system...I still have my BOSE unit in my cupboard!

Hey Booner, any stats on the real world running costs of these things? I get a bit confused sometimes because on the one hand I've heard people say they're a great buy, less expensive than other marques to run, but on the other hand I hear (read) the same a few months later where it's stated they're expensive to run ! :o

Also, with the individual mods you do, i.e. replacing the wheels, changing the exhaust, basically every little bit - do you declare it with insurance I assume? How much more did it cost each time you added another mod?

In answer to your running cost question, I thought that the costs were reasonable given the car/performance provided.

During my ownership, this is roughly what I have spent over the year on my 350z:
Insurance for a year £1500 ish at 21 (now down to £950 with 3years ncb)
Big service £320
Uprated discs and pads all round £600ish fitted
Small service £180 (should last it for another 9months)
Tax £220 ish
MOT £50

So about £2870 over the year.

About £250 a month in fuel (200 miles a week at a low 20mpg figure for mixed/progressive driving)

However the brakes might not need doing for any other zed, mine were just due when I bought it.

I found it very affordable to run. Falken 452 tyres lasted forever even with my progressive driving and lots of car meets. The fuel was to be expected for any similar performance car in that catagory. The servicing was reasonable and it was very reliable.

I have read many posts and corrected a few people on here that "have a cousin who has a friend who had one and it was a money pit, servicing really expensive" etc. I spent a lot of time on the community forums and they will pretty much all tell you the same story as my (relatively short) ownership.

The modifications on insurance question, well I went about this by adding everything I had bought in preparation to fit to the car and my list of things I was going to modify (which I had a budget set aside to do pretty sharpish) and made sure I included them all in the insurance pricing before I took out the policy. With Bell/Admiral, it worked out about more £50 to modify over leaving it standard. However, if you start modifying too much...they will charge you per modification etc.

From experience, as long as you declare everything and just give them a call before going ahead with buying the modification, they should be fine and charge you an admin fee at worst case for any decorative changes.

You didnt really own it long enough to come into any expense though Booner really. I took one out from the local Nissan dealer last year, the guy went through servicing costs with me and the real shocker was the price of discs and pads. I think it ran into 4 figures

Yeah the 350z is slightly more complicated. You have to screw up your hands getting the dash out, then spend some time spent wiring up/soldering/crimping and then destroying your soul getting all the additional wiring and the HU back into the dash.

My hands were bleeding in many places :(

Agreed, much cheaper than other cars in it's class (S2000, Z4 etc). Not quite sure why either

I'm really looking forward to the weekend now :D.

Yeah but I still went through this process first hand myself, during my relatively short (9-12 month) ownership.

Uprated grooved Ultimax discs (x4) and uprated redstuff Pads (x4) =£480
Installation by a Nissan dealer £150 (so could have got it cheaper on labour or changed manually I'm sure)

Total = £630 ish

Take the first dealer part prices for OEM stuff, then yes.. you are likely to get taken for a ride.

I also went through two services:

At start of ownership with biggest service (P3) £320
At end of ownership with normal service (P1) £180

That's really not huge for a performance car with a 9-12 month interval between. There's no belt to change either.

I would offer to help, but:

a.) It's too stressful
b.) You are too far away
c.) It's too stressful!

Make sure you have at least one friend to help get the dash back in, or you will get rattles (if you manage to get it in alone!)

350z is a good car to have at the moment. They are actually going up in value every month! A friend of mine had an 06 plate GT that he bought about 18 months ago for £14k with 14k on the clock. He did just 1600 miles in that 18 months, and has sold it 2 weeks ago to the trade for £15k. Not a bad thing, making money from owning a car for over a year, shame he was never at home to drive it though. He bought a Boxter S from some garage in england, drove it home, didnt like it, took it back to the same garage and came back with a 58 plate M3 convertible. Oh to have that kind of money...

Regarding the rays, I haven't got a clue if I'm honest. Like I said above, I'm looking to upgrade them. I'm going to look in to whether they came standard on all GT's, I can't see why she would change them for the standards.

Think it was around 2005/06 onwards that RAY's became standard on GT's my Nov 2004 54 plate came with them but the original owner specified them as a cost option.

Nice car, id have another if I could fit a buggy and car seat in lol

Yeah, thought so. I've been looking on pistonheads and there seem to be a lot of gt's with the standard alloys. I'm not too fussed, don't look too bad. The ray's are quite hard to get hold of now and nismo's are out of my price range. Looking at some gtr rota's, seem to be popular with the owners.

What if I supply some biscuits and a stress ball!? :D

My Zed EATS my money. So far it's eaten 6x tyres, 4x pads, 1x exhaust, 1x P2 Service, 1x windscreen, 1 x sprayed bumper, 5not to mention detailing products and insurance and FUEL. I'm not going to add it up.

Regarding the Rays, just checked - Rays became standard with MY06. Prior to that they were an option, even with GT pack cars (which all UK, non-import cars were).

there were non gt pack cars too? ones that came without leather and bose etc?

How long did you have it? I had mine about 16months and went through 1 set of rear tyres in 10k, but they were half worn when i got it and that was it other than fuel, which if driven normally wasnt TOO bad :D

Still got it! About a year now i think. There were not GT cars, but all UK cars were GT, so the non GT's are imports.

Are you sure about that? I thought the tell tale sign was the rear bumper shape around the numberplate, and also volume controls on steering wheel plus headlight washers & Brembro brakes, Uk ones are the only ones to have the long registration number and the imports have a square number plates, ive seen plenty of non gt with uk number plates and no leather etc, you could well be right but I thought there was a choice

Like this one for example?
