LOTRO to go 'free to play' in the autumn....

In an ideal world you shouldn't even have to move to another location. All it takes is a good firm hand by the GMs, hoping thats the attitude they take.

Even the most rigorous hand will not be able to stop someone rolling an elf, and 10 minutes later he will be Celondim and be able to jump all over the place ****ing everyone off, using 1337 speak and the rest. With a firm hand these people will be eliminated by around level 30, which is why I suggested Evendim, but no one can stop these people being in the starter areas, and this may also have a pretty negative impact on the pony, but lets be honest that isn't real RP at all.

Bought the original game and Mines of Moria recently to give it a whack for a month, and quite enjoying it.

Question is...IS it still worth forking out for the £75 sub before the end of the month? What does that get me that free players won't have?

Will going F2P affect my chances of using the Moria addon I already have?

I have a lifetime subscription to LOTRO. What will Free-to-Play mean for me?

As a lifetime subscriber to LOTRO, you will keep all of your membership privileges and are automatically upgraded to VIP status. You will receive 500 Free Turbine Points every month like the other VIPs, but you do not have to pay a monthly fee since you are a lifetime member. All you have to do is keep playing the game and visit the LOTRO Store to spend your free Turbine Points. Lifetime members may also qualify for a special one-time Loyalty Reward of 1,000 Turbine Points. See the Loyalty Reward Special Offer Terms & Conditions for full details.

Also found this:

No! Volume 3, Book 2 will continue the Volume 3 Epic Story as the Rangers head south. An all new area, Enedwaith, will be available as well as some exciting new features and many updates to the game including DX11 support! So it seems that Dx11 is coming out the same time the F2P is released.

Well if what I have read so far is correct, being on F2P would actually rather knacker your Moria addon as F2P only goes up to level 50 (and only has quests til around the mid 20s) so you wouldnt really get to do anything with Moria as thats for higher levels.

(at least those things apply without paying extra)

Someone posted a chart earlier in the thread which listed the differences between F2P and paid accounts. As I recall the major differences were quests beyond the mid-20s, access to all areas and being able to do the "monster play" PvP on paid accounts. So quite a bit.

As for whether its worth you paying the £75...well that depends on how much you like the game. If you like it and think that you will play it for 6 months then sure, why not, gets you access to everything and would cost roughly the same as 6 months payments anyway. If you think you will play for a year then of course its even cheaper.

I read that people without Lifetime Membership still have to pay a monthly fee for their VIP status.

The way I see it is:

VIP - Lifetimers or current subs.

Premium - People who have subbed or used turbine points before, but are now using the f2p model.

F2P - People playing the game with none of the "additional" content.

From what I understand, you can still access Moria content as you have bought that but will not be able to access high level Shadows of Angmar stuff without subbing.

Just might find it tough in Moria due to not being able to level higher than 50. (then again...does having the Moria addon allow a F2P player to go beyond 50...so many questions !)

Does pose an interesting question though, as it says on the chart that F2P only get the quests for Ered Luin, Shire and Bree-land...do they get the Moria quests ? I suppose they do, but havent seen anything yet saying so.

Will it ever go "Fun to play"?

Hard to say...no matter what they do not everyone will find it fun to play. I find it fun to play. My work colleague however doesnt...he finds EvE fun to play, which I dont. So my guess is that the answer is yes, it will go "Fun to play" but only to certain clientele :D

They will have to purchase or have purchased the Moria expansion to have access. I think having Moria will allow you to level to 60, and Mirkwood 65.

Ah right, so as long as they buy the expansion they can get access to the higher levels and still effectively remain F2P. Thats pretty good then, could effectively see "all" the game without having to pay monthly fees.

Actually what some miss out on is the fact of that if you have Lifetime/VIP Subsription you automatically get all the updates bar major expansions for the game. So say the normal book releases you normally get as it stands now you will automatically get them since your Subbed to LOTRO much like now. We also gain an additional 500 points to blow on the Store per month. This is how it works in DDO :).

now if you are a F2P user or Premium you'd need to purchase those updates/adventure packs, server slots etc this is because you are NOT paying an subscription.

The idea is its up to you to what you purchase :) its more expensive if you dont have a Sub, whilst offering small things to tempt the Subscriber's to purchase from the store e.g extra char slots, storage space, cosmetics, pots :)

It does amuse me the doom and gloom when people avoiding some possible facts.! Lets not also forget DDO is almost onto its 5th update since september!!!!!! LOTRO has had 1 in 6 months obviously this F2P model will be a great benefit as more content = more money as the F2P players/preimum will want and demand it thus purchase it!.

Yeah I am still mulling over whether to buy the lifetime myself or not. I've played LOTRO on and off since release, totalling maybe 7 or 8 months time. Got several max'ed out characters. I would rather prefer to see what the effects are on Laurelin before deciding whether to get the lifetime but dont suppose I have that chance.

Not a massive player of the game (or any game these days I suppose), but its the sort of game that I may hop back into every 4 or 5 months for a month or two.

I wouldn't buy a lifetime sub right now tbh. Maybe it will be worth it, but really you don't know what you are buying with it as details are still a little thin on the ground.

Not really, the faq is pretty comprehensive. Literally the only reason I'm wary is because I'm on Laurelin and I'm not sure how it will affect the community.

I've played DDO with the same system for a few months and while it works really well, you do end up either paying for a sub or buying stuff, or both. I think this will guarantee the game's future for a long time, means we'll see a lot more of middle earth.

Anyone thinking they'll be able to play a decent amount of the game for free or build up enough points in-game to buy stuff without spending money is fooling themselves though.
