Asus rampage III Extreme

Hey mate, I have a similar LG drive, fan controller and X-Fi bay as you ;)
The charcoal dvdrw sort of ruins your look a bit. Nice temps by the way.

It's a Pioneer BDR-205 12x BluRay RW so I can't complain. The picture makes the charcoal look a bit bad but it's ok in real life.

I'm pleased with the temps as none of the fans are ramped up and it's warm in here. Now time to get back to overclocking. :)

Would you consider ditching the fan controller and using the motherboard headers to control the fans. I notice they are all pwm. Will they control standard 3pin fans too ?

Are you using the stock corsair fans by the way ?

I changed my dram frequency to 1866 or something and now my computer doesnt get into post and thers no display although theres power going into the motherboard. I have taken out all hardware and put back in again including memory but this hasnt helped. I have also taken the bios battery out but this hasnt helped the problem. Do you think i have killed my board? Any solutions to these problems?

I'm already using five headers (including the CPU) on the motherboard. I like the controller because I can set whatever speed or temperature level I want so it stays and I like the external temperature sensors.

The motherboard should control 3 pin fans and you can configure fan speed settings in the bios but not to the extent you can with the fan controller. Have a look in the manual (3.6.7).

I am using the stock corsair fans and at present don’t see the need to change them.

Do you have S3 power saving/sleep mode enabled in Windows?

I have the same RAM as you Corsair Dominator GT 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-16000C8 2000MHz Triple Channel Kit (CMG6GX3M3A2000C8) and have had no problems with this RAM and the Asus rampage III Extreme board.

I have ran my RAM at 1866 and now 2000 with the i7 980X CPU not overclocked in any way and the system is running absolutely fine.

I would say as you had the dram led lighting up red, that could mean that one or more of your RAM sticks are faulty damaged or maybe your board is damaged.

I`m sure if the dram led is lighting up as green, that means everything is ok.

I can only hope mate you get your system sorted out.

Your the first person i have heard of that is using the same memory as me with no problems. I can figure wtf is wrong with my board. I didnt buy from oc but another trusted website. Problem is i have no idea what i need to check or fix, the motherboard or the memory? Gonna try some other memory in my board now and see if thats ok.
Scrap that i just remembered its ddr2 and wont fit lol

I want to ask, it was just the RAM you originally had the problems with? If so, like I said above, one or more of your RAM sticks may have been faulty damaged as you were only seeing 4GB out of 6GB and the only thing you can do is to RMA the RAM and hope the board hasn`t been damaged during RAM testing.

You can either do the above or buy some some different cheaper RAM to test to make sure the board is still ok.

Had similar problems with my R3. The board actually worked for a short while, enough to get the first part of Windows 7 installed. Then the display just suddenly stopped working.

Using the exact same RAM I was getting no display but the MB seemed to be booting up fine (all the lights and fans came on.) I was getting a red light on 'boot device' although nothing was plugged in or installed apart from cpu/ram/video card.

I pressed all the little red buttons on the board, the Q button, the bios switch button and the other one (memory thing?). This did bugger all.

As a very last resort before RMAing it I swapped the DVI cable and it worked perfectly. Not a problem since. Very weird but happy I didn't have to send it back. Been wondering though if the R3 actually killed my DVI cable :D

So is there a known issue with Dominator GT and this board. Did you check the Corsair forums ?

I've decided not to get this board afterall as it looks like I won't be able to run a X-Fi and 2 5970 4gig cards in this board.

Although the 5970 4gig card is a 3 slot design it practically blocks out 4 slots over the fan grille. For example, take a look at my EVGA board.

In a normal 2 slot design card, you could sitll squeeze a 2nd card into the 2nd PCI-e slot. However with this 5970, the 2nd red slot is blocked as expected, but so is the PCI slot below it!! This is due to the fan grilles on the card!!!

Now a lot of people are getting the Rampage III board

Looks familiar doesn't it. I'm betting the PCI-e 4x slot will be inaccessable just like the EVGA board. So if you ever want to run a separate sound card you are going to have to use the 3rd or 4th PCI-e 16x slot. More importantly if you ever want to ad another 5970 4gig, you will have to go back to onboard sound, or else add a dual slot card instead and use the last red PCI-e 16x slot for sound.

Not a problem with my EVGA as I can slap the soundcard in the very top PCI-e 1x slot. But no usb 3.0 or SATA 3 :(

If you haven't already brought the cards you could also just wait... the ATI refresh is due soon. Not only that but I can't see that Sapphire will remain the sole provider of 4GB 5970s, ASUS and other providers should bring out some 3 or even 2 slot design ones. If you have already brought them, simple solution: watercool them.

You can't really complain that ASUS or EVGA didn't incorporate a 4 slot graphics card design into their plan: p Most people who pay that much on a graphics card would watercool it anyway.

If you use triple slotted cards, the middle PCIe x4 slot should be free.

Yeah but the card he is on about is a tripple slot, plus a little extra where the fan grill on the card goes:

Out of curiosity, why are those cards so ridiculously priced? Almost double the price of the 2GB version, so you pay about 500 quid for 2GB of memory on the graphics card, which doesn't even make that much difference anyway...

If I was spending the same money I would consider a 3-4 way SLI with GTX 480s and watercool them, about the same price yet a heck of a lot faster.

Try setting the memory timing mode in bios to 3N and see if that works.

Yep im pretty sure my board is *****d as im not get anything from it now. Cold boot problem for sure. My ram must have damaged it. Question now is do i buy a new board or new ram? Im not sure which one is causing the problem. If i set the ram frequency to 1866 but it can go higher does this mean the ram was damaged or the board? im thinking the board. Anyone know better ram then the corsair dominators 6gb 16000 (2000) for the same price(£340)?

I wonder why this board was delayed so long, hardware problems ?

I was going to get it , but have now decided to stick with my UD7, I've had no problems with it for three months, as with the other Gigabyte boards I've had for five years.

I must admit the Asus board looks awesome compared to the UD7, but looks are not everything.

If it all goes to S*** which i think it has im going to get a new board. Im going round a mates house now with my ram to test it on his motherboard. If the ram is screwed then i guess i will buy new ram but personaly i think its the mother board. Will let everyone know on next post.

Whats a good alternative motherboard for gaming? Soemthing that is quite newish?
