How long in the gym?

Imo I wouldn't say he was doing it wrong, depends what he did in that time. But it is a bit much if lifting for that length of time. Intensity is key.

I was lifting very heavy and needed the recovery time hence the long sessions.

The repercussions of pulling 400 kilos on a pulley lol:D.

Intensity is key to a certain type of training, not always.

As I said before, there are no hard and fast rules - it depends on your knowledge, what your body is able to do, and the recovery/intensity at which you train. All have benefits, but all need to be varied from time to time. It depends on which phase of your routine you've got to.

~1 hour usually, lots of volume up to 1hr30. Currently adding 15-20 minutes cardio to the end of each session too.

Well personally I just focus on pure mass. My belief is none of this light lifting effort for tons of reps. Example my chest day is pretty simple flat db bench + incline bench plus finish off with some incline flyes. All in all 12 sets tops. But what I focus on is the intensity, heavy as possible but obviously with good form. Works a treat. I personally aim for 6-8 reps for compounds and 8-10 for isolation.... Works for me.
