Motors is a ****hole IMO.

I ask for a recommendation for a nice road to enjoy driving on, I get 3 useful replies (thanks) and 100 complete BS replies about how I'm lying, I'm going to die, it's illegal, I'm a "known fantasist" and so on..

I remember that. How was the drive? Did you take any pics?

Thing is, they are actually the best cars in their class though so of course they are going to get recommended.

And if you wanted help with finding a Mini then you'd get tons of advice regarding that car. No one would suggest otherwise unless at the bottom of your post stated that they are open to suggestions for something similar. That's something a lot of people miss.

And when it comes to recommending cameras... the normal response is Canon or Nikon... because they are the better brands.. never Sony or Pentax.

Thats the thing.

With Cameras, its the Photos that matters.

With cars, its a mix of just getting from A -> B, the prefer of a particular often comes into play. And often a big part.

Like with cars, I just don't want a Ford or Vauxhall, personal preference, call me badge snob all you want, but I just rather not get them, even if they are the best bang for buck.

In motors i will get slated for that, with lots of reasons why...and I CAN see where they are coming from, Fox, as opinionated as he is, he does have grounds to his reasons, sounds economical grounds. It just I feels, cars are more than just A -> B for some people.

Time you went over there and said it, they can't hear you here. :p

Can you spec me a DSLR under £500.

And it must be available in Brown.

In fairness though, that is generally the best route to go - you'll get to the stage where you want to get the readily available lenses for Canon/Nikon, which you can't with Sony/Olympus. Also, didn't you recently swap to Canon? :p

:D

I did indeed changed over. Don't get me wrong, I love my Olympus and it's ZD lenses but the lack of fast prime annoyed me, and I need them for my next step in photography.

I was more along the lines of what Raymond was saying, a classic Mini, it's what that person would like or prefer, but in photography, there will always be someone coming in and say nah, Canon and/or Nikon is better. Fit for purpose, fit for the person is more important IMO. Not everyone will be upgrading and not everyone wanting a DSLR for their travels will need a Canon xxD range when the smaller more travel friendly range from Olympus/Panasonic would be a wiser choice.

Anyway...

Yes, I can:

Obvious trolling post looking for a reaction and you bit. OP is probably laughing.

Avoid Motors if you want advice that's unbiased and not laced with underhanded insults and judgemental responses. Your motives are always relentlessly questioned. Sounds harsh but it's true.

There is almost no point asking for advice in motors to what cars to get. The answers are mostly the same. Under £2k you'll get a Mondeo to get as a response. Under £5k budget you'll get a Focus as the car of choice as response. Under £10k you get more varied answers but secondhand, BMW will come in somewhere.

There is no room for personal preference. What if i grew up liking to get a Classic Mini Cooper? And seen a 1994 Monte Carlo edition with 5,000 miles on the clock for £9,000? Sure you can get a lot of other cars for £9,000 but that's not the point. The point is fullfilling a childhood dream. Who cares about practicality, who cares about modern car gizmos or running costs. Those things one would be willing to sacrafice PRECISELY because one want something he has been yearning for for years.

Motors don't get that.

You don't get it because it's quite a specialist choice, it's like recommending a 10k 1973 MK1 Escort when someone wants a family car for 10k. People ask for advice because they don't know what to go for, if someone wants a 1994 Mini, they'll probably have it set in their mind from the offset.

You miss the point. You're right in what you say about being set in wanting the mini, the problem is though; whilst some will help in that regard, plenty of others will berate the decision and be of no help in sourcing a decent mini at all.

You get that in every car forum. For what it's worth everytime I've posted about a specific car, I have been given mostly good information with the odd crappy post. In fact there's a couple of Classic Mini owners in Motors and they get nothing but praise for their cars. If a car is truely crap, you'll hear about it whether you want to or not.

Probably because it's highly unlikely that an 18 year old will be able to obtain insurance on such a vehicle with next to no experience and you constantly avoided my question which was how? Well feel free to make everyone look stupid in a couple of weeks, I really look forward to it, if it indeed happens.

So we don't always spec Nikon or Canon, only when it fits the brief. Which since about 90% of the spec me threads are "I want to buy my first DSLR I have £X, and I don't care if it's brown." we are generally going to suggest cameras from the market leaders simply because they make good cameras that are well supported.

There used to be Massive meets in Wales back in Desmo, Matt & Piggys day.

Sorry mate, I don't remember ever seeing you at any of the Swansea meets? Or the camping meets? What about the Edinburgh meets or Chester etc etc?

What about the Motors meets? Not ever seen you at an RR day or a MM or the NYMM or a Southern Meet?

Been to any of the photography forum meets?

I'd say from personal experience of all of the meets that the Motors meets are at least as well attended as any of the GD meets of years gone by and currently they are the most attended of them all. There were more people at the Southern (motors) meet that I recently attended than some of the Swansea meets.
