Any idea why subscription got dumped? I thought LOTRO was doing pretty well
FTP / PTP cash shop model rocketted DDO from the bottom of the MMORPG pile right up to the top place for free to play games.
Turbine reported that after making the game FTP, not only did they see so much more increased revenue from the cash shop method, but also they ended up with far many more players opting to take a full subscription as well.
The subscription only based model that has been used now for god knows how long was doomed to fail from the start. It is a ridiculous payment option, requiring people to continuosly pay every month for a game which they may only want to play for a few days at a time.
Subscription models have never been casual gamer friendly, they really only work for people who have lots of time, and the interest required to want to play on a near daily basis. That is actually a very small number of players, at least outside of WoW, that are willing to pay fees every month to play their video games.
The fee based system also spread gamers out far and thin across any such game that isnt WoW. The majority of fee payers will only ever subscribe to one game only, and no more. This is what greatly reduced the number of players in other MMOs, and the more fee based MMOs that get released, the fewer and fewer people there eventually will be in each.
Turbines model that they have placed into DDO is IMHO absolutely faultless and perfect. f you still want to pay a sub and get access to everything, then you can and never need to worry about the cash shop as they also give you free points every month.
For people who dont want to pay fees (As DDO proved, the vast majority of players who ended up going to the game after the FTP was launched), they now had the option to downlaod, install, and login to play whenever and wherever they wanted with access to a limited, but sufficient amount of content to keep them busy and satisfied. Should they then decide that they enjoy the game (which hundreds of thousands of FTP people eventually did with DDO), they then have 3 options -
1) Never pay a dime and slowly and gradually unlock extra content with free turbine points earned in game
2) Pay however much they can afford to and want to in one go and buy the content that they want in mini expansions through the cash shop
3) Sign up to the subscription and get a VIP account with all content unlocked, and 500 free cash shop points every month.
Now with LOTRO, the lifetime subscription has now proven to be an absolute steal - especially at just £75, as it will open up a full VIP account after the game goes FTP, with 500 free points each month, without ever having to pay anything more to access everything in the game. Both the expansion, and any new content that they release will be purchasable for free by saving up those free VIP account points as well as anything else that is released through the cash shop.
The thing is with this system, is that DDO is one of the most difficult to understand and learn MMOs out there, and Turbine made lots of difficulty changes to compensate for this (casual mode, dumbed down normal mode, and a new epic mode for pro / hardcore DDO players). Surprisingly however, I started playing when the game went FTP, and I never encountered a single 'noob' that didnt already know or understand how to play the game, as opposed to games like WoW and GW where a lot of players are just absolute crap and playing with them eventually leads to a failure, I never encountered and part of DDO where people didnt know how to play their character well, and people actually listened to others in their group when being told what to do (except me OFC, I were that one idiot that made a gold crazy dwarf that saw chests and went 'ZOMG Chest!!!!! CCCHHHHAAAAARRRRGGGGGEEEEEE ..... OMG NOEZ, NOOOO WAAAAY, IM ******* DEAD FROM A BOOBY TRAP'

).
But I learnt fast, and even made myself a rogue and were pro in like just a few weeks of playing
