LOTRO to go 'free to play' in the autumn....

I might actually start playing this. Is the PvP fun?

What's a good PvP class?

Yea, you have the wrong game here. The only MMORPG (even the devs dont call it one of those) that has good PVP is Guild Wars, but I have always found it to have rubbish PVE.

Lotro is more PVE focused and pretty much a WoW clone in terms of gameplay.

Not entirely sure I agree with that, both UO and Daoc had good PvP (along with most sandbox mmos imo), but that's a whole different topic

It might just be a sideshow but it is very good, has kept me addicted for years and ive pumped months of /played time into it, as have many people.

It's a bit like DAOC, there are keeps scattered all over a zone and we fight for control of them, in the evenings you generally get full raid vs raid action, i.e. 24 vs 24, but it can often rise above 30 per side at primetime, it used to go above 50 but populations have died down. Only game I have found that is modern with open map world pvp that is active.

I'd recomend the trial, if it hooks you then it can literally suck you in for years.

Don't get me wrong, the pvmp can be fun, but for someone looking for an mmo with a strong pvp side, lotro isn't one that I would recommend. If I recall correctly, chk4 is quite big into pvp and very open pvp, sometimes with free for all pvp. (apologies chk4 if I have you mixed up with someone else :) )

In that regard, lotro isn't one I would suggest to a heavy pvper. But by all means, try the trial out. Just don't whine on here about the pvp after I have already warned on it :D

By the way, after reading through the first few pages, people should remember that the £75 lifetime sub is actually a lot cheaper than buying all the extra content on FTP would be.

I made a second character because I need an Explorer to make myself some armor and get ores for my LM. I have a Lore Master Historian, and made a Minstrel that will take explorer to get ores and make light armors :)

Then when I get Mines of Moria later on, I'll make a Rune Keeper Tinker to make jewelry, and food from my Historians farming.

Complicated? Very =D

Historian - Scholar, Farming, Weaponsmith (needs ores from prospecting)
Explorer - Forester, Prospector, Tailor (Makes light and medium armor for both toons from the forester skill, and provides ores for the Historian's Weaponsmith skill).
Tinker - Cook (makes food from the Historians farming), Prospecting, Jeweler (uses ores).

Who do I send a tell too to join the OCUK guild?

Always liked the minstrel class, I'm a sucker for bard classes in games :)

Well, I'm role playing a short, depressed emo hobit minstrel it now seems:

Bavlo - The Depressed Shortie.

Bavlo spent his early years as a child growing up with the promise from his mother that he would one day grow up to be as tall as any man or elf.

every year on his birthday, bavlo would ask - 'mommy, why havnt i grown?', and his mommy would reply 'erm, well, you see, erm, thats because you arent 16 years of age yet, you will start to grow at 16 years old'.

this made bavlo the young hobbit very happy, and he spent every year thereafter with a smile on his face, and the joy in heart that he would one day become middle earth's tallest hobbit, as tall as any man, or any elf.

bavlo eventually reached 16 years of age. he still didnt grow, but was believed that he would over the following year.

at 17, bavlo was still not any taller, he was a little dismayed but thought - 'mommy cant have lied to me, it will just take a little more time'.

at 18, as a result of not having grown anymore, bavlo learnt how to use his dagger on his short, stumpy wrists.

Tee hee.

Hi mate, you got the right guy, I love my PvP it's why I mainly play MMOs if I'm honest (Free for all pvp is the best!)

Thanks though for the replies guys :)

I may give it a try if I'm honest as much as I love my PvP I need a game which I can casually play due to my training and rl commitments.

The bane of PC RPGs.

I cant believe the number of console players that got annoyed with the idea of tactical pausing in Dragon Age Origins, and also Oblivion was major dumbed down to work well on consoles too.

In DGO, they actually made the difficulty levels easier on the console, so whereas on Normal difficulty on the PC all your spells did friendly fire, on the consoles they didnt.

It annoys me very much why there are no longer as many great PC oriented RPGs being made anymore as there used to be, two things led to this decline, fee based MMOs, and the declining popularity of PC gaming.

IMO fee based MMOs truly destroyed RPG gaming experience for me. I wanted to play Lotro, WoW and AoC, but everytime I think of the fee I absolutely cant bring myself to wanting to pay every month just to be able to log in to play.

Must admit that MMO fees have never really bothered me, I get far more entertainment value per month for a £10 MMO fee than almost any other form of entertainment in life. For me its always struck me as amazingly good value. Mind you, when I started MMOing broadband didnt exist and you had to pay per hour for your internet connection...now that was pricey ! I remember that a month on UO could easily cost me £100 :)

(of course, £75 for life on LOTRO is even better value though)

I remember being on AoL...

Had the UO sub... The phone line cost and then paying AOL by the min like you said I remember those high prices! Although it wasn't me paying them as I was like 12 or 13 or something :D

Hahaha yeah...prices back then were a killer, I remember one month on UO in particular which cost me £143. To make matters even worse of course I was playing on a 56k modem to servers in the US with pings of around 400ms, being charged by the hour to be connected to the net. :D

And today people moan about a £10 charge, while sitting on their 20mb broadband ! *grumble grumble old man grumble moan* heheh :D
