Valve has a surprise for us..

"We're bringing steam to consoles, automatic updates, steamcloud"
Not exactly innovation there is it, automatic updates to console games.
¬_¬

Which consoles offer automatic updates? Both the Xbox 360 and PS3 only check for updates when launching a game, leaving a player having to either wait for the download or having to stick to playing offline.

Automatic for me says that it checks in the background and downloads when you're not using the console.

I'm very curious how they will handle the comples moves required for portal games, generall console gamers have a harder time aiming and being quick to focus a "crosshair" to locations. If left in it's current state I can see lots of consolers getting frustrated. No doubt a system will be put in place to aid in this disability.

You are aware that the first Portal game was a huge success on the Xbox 360? Both as part of the Orange Box and standalone on XBLA.

This is one of the features of the new PlaystationPlus subscription apparently. :)

My point exactly, it's automatic already, you do nothing but accept the update.

No, this thread gives misleading information, people are complaining the game is now on consoles, but it already is? :P

Is anyone else mildly despondent at all this "transition from product to service" and "social networking in games" talk?

I mean, what about those of us who just want to play a well-designed game now and again?

what makes people annoyed is the fact that valve seem more interested in consoles now and not the pc , is it not fact that pc gamers made valve when the company was young ?

I think the announcement is a disappointment (obviously as 99% were expecting a PC related announcement) but I don't see why this means the end of PC gaming. The Orange Box, L4D and L4D2 are on both 360 and PS3 and that hasn't meant the end to Valve's interest in PC gaming. Nothing wrong with a company wanting to have their games/services on multiple platforms, in this day and age there is no reason to have your work stuck on one platform.

L4d 1 or 2 isn't on PS3. I didn't say it was the end of PC gaming, I just said nearing the end. The only thing left being playing 1.1 versions on console games because that's all they are. even then, many of the big names are console only.

My reading of automatic update is that the user doesn't even have to accept, it downloads in the background or when the user is watching a DVD or something so that the game is ready when they want to play. Just like Steam.

Yep. Portal 1 was released on both PS3 and Xbox 360 as part of the Orange Box. People liked it enough that it was released as a standalone on the Xbox Live Arcade. :)

This makes all the "OMG It's on the PS3!" rage hilarious to me. :D It's nothing new.

There's only 1 or 2 complaining about this. The rest of us are severely disappointed that the "surprise" was something we already knew. Portal was obviously going to be on PS3, how is it a surprise at all?

So disappointing. :(

I find it quite surprising actually. :) Especially after Gabe Newell said:

"The PS3 is a total disaster on so many levels, I think It’s really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted. I’d say, even at this late date, they should just cancel it and do a ‘do over’. Just say, ‘This was a horrible disaster and we’re sorry and we’re going to stop selling this and stop trying to convince people to develop for it.’"

The fact that L4D1/2 didn't make it there sort of cemented that Valve were distancing themselves from the PS3, so it is a surprise to see Gabe up on stage with them.

Sure it's not the epic surprise that a lot of people were building it up to be, but what did you expect? :p

Does it matter though?

I mean what's the difference to PC users if it's on PC/360 or PC/360/PS3?

None at all. I didn't say there was. :p

I don't understand the raging though just because it's coming to PS3. Essentially, the rage is due to expecting something that wasn't promised.

EDIT: Like this :D

pc gamers made valve in the early years , now the pc gamer is beeing shafted
